A Bronx woman was killed on Saturday when an SUV pulled into the sidewalk and pinned her against a wrought-iron fence, police and distraught neighbors said.
Friends broke their hearts when they told the Daily News that Paulina Nrecaj, 59, passed away late Friday night.
Around 6:30 a.m., Nrecaj was standing on a sidewalk near the intersection where Bronxdale Avenue and Cruger Avenue meet in Pelham Parkway. When a man in a 2016 Lexus SUV swerved to avoid hitting a stopped van on Friday, police said she got caught on the fence. The man is 45 years old.
The truck drove on and eventually collided with the building the woman was standing behind.
A local resident named Francisco Dayron, who was 36 and witnessed the accident, explained that the object “jumped over the curb; it was on the other side of the sidewalk.”
According to police, a woman was killed when an SUV drove over a curb and rammed her into a wrought-iron fence. The collision occurred Friday afternoon at the intersection of Bronxdale Avenue and Cruger Avenue on Pelham Parkway, which is in the Bronx.
The police version and Dayron’s version of events disagree. He stated that the driver of the SUV was trying to avoid a collision with a person riding a scooter.
Due to the layout of the road, you have to turn at a certain angle. Dayron stated that the motorist stated that he did not want to collide with him (the scooter). Instead, Dayron reported that the incident happened when “he was hitting her on the sidewalk.”
Nrecaj was found to be in serious condition and was transported to Jacobi Medical Center. According to her neighbors, she died later that night.
The driver, who remained with the vehicle at the scene of the accident, was also transported to Jacobi Hospital, where his condition was noted as stable.
How is Paulina Nrecaj now?
According to the police, no charges have been filed at this time and the investigation is still ongoing.
Desperate community members gathered near the crash site on Saturday night to erect a memorial for those who died, leaving flowers, candles and balloons at the memorial.
“An excellent lady. She could see my whole childhood. A neighbor who declined to give her name commented that she was known throughout the community.
“Everyone loved her. Dayron noted that there was much affection for her in the community. “My grandfather had cancer and she would visit him every day to check on him and bring him things…. She has a very beautiful singing voice. I can hear her now. She had a soft spot for my daughters.
According to several of her neighbors, the mother-of-three was originally from Albania and she and her husband have made their home on Bronxdale Avenue. Nrecaj’s son, too upset with his mother to talk about her, stood across the street with his hands on his chest.
