On December 18, 2017, Mohammed posted an old picture of his father and said it had been 22 years since he died. The actor is glad that he was able to spend some quality time with his father. He can remember everything that ever happened.

Mo thought that if his father were still alive, he would take over the phone business. He was a genius with phones and other technology. The actor enjoyed watching him work.

Amer’s family is from Palestine and he is the youngest of six children. Amer’s father worked as an engineer for the Kuwait Oil Company. In October 1990, when Amer was nine years old, he, his sister Haifa, his brother and his mother left Kuwait because of the Gulf War. They moved to Houston, Texas after coming to the United States.

In 1992, Amer’s father joined them in the United States. He was a telecommunications engineer. Amer attended Piney Point Elementary School while his older brothers went to school abroad. His brother Omar is a pilot and another brother has a PhD in biochemistry. Amer’s father died in 1995 when he was 14 years old.

Career

When Amer was 10 years old, his older brother took him to see Bill Cosby at the Houston Astrodome. Amer was 14 when he saw his first stand-up comedy show at a rodeo in Texas.

After the death of his father, Amer began skipping school and going to Mexico with his friends without permission. Amer’s English teacher arranged with him that if he did a Shakespearean monologue in front of the class, she would correct his grade before he started skipping school and let him try comedy every Friday before class. Amer graduated and then focused on what he loved. Then he participated in high school theater and had leading roles. He started stand-up comedy by posing as a family member and improved at it in comedy clubs over a few years. Amer frequented as many Houston comedy clubs as he could to improve his performance while working during the day at a family friend’s flag factory.

Amer entered Houston’s Funniest Person Contest in June 1999 and made it to the finals. Then another comedian told him that The Comedy Showcase was the best guided comedy room. Danny Martinez, who ran The Comedy Showcase, took him under his wing and taught him how to stand up. At 19 he was flown overseas to play for US troops stationed there. He was the first and only Arab-American refugee comedian to perform for US and coalition forces overseas.

Amer has toured more than 27 countries on five continents including Germany, Italy, Sicily, Japan, Korea and Bahrain. He has also been on the Allah Made Me Funny comedy tour since 2006 with Muslim comedians Preacher Moss and Azhar Usman.

In 2004 he performed at The Comedy Festival in Las Vegas.

In April 2007 he played at the Royal Albert Hall for an event organized by Islamic Relief called the Islamic Relief Evening of Inspiration.

In July 2008 he did a show at the London Olympia Islam Expo. In October 2008 he did a show at the ExCeL Exhibition Center in London for the Global Peace and Unity event hosted by Islam Channel.

Amer has performed sold out shows around the world including the Royal Albert Hall and Hammersmith Apollo in London, Acer Arena in Sydney, Nelson Mandela Theater in Johannesburg and the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. He has also performed at the Malmo Arts Festival in Sweden, the Amman Stand-up Comedy Festival in Jordan and the World’s Funniest Island Festival (Australia).

Amer has guest-starred on NPR, BBC and CNN, among others, to speak about his life and work. He has appeared on television, in independent films and has been interviewed by more than 100 of the world’s major news outlets including The New York Times, Rolling Stone and The Guardian. He was also the only Arab-American comedian to appear with Bassem Youssef (The Daily Show of Egypt) at Al-Bernameg.

Amer worked with his longtime stand-up partner Azhar Usman to make his first feature-length documentary comedy special. It was co-produced by Kalijaga Media LLC, which they both owned. On May 3, 2015, Amer taped his hour-long special Legally Homeless at the Warner Theater performed by Live Nation Comedy. He was the first Arabic-American to have his own hour-long stand-up special on national television. The show’s title comes from the fact that Amer has been to more than 20 countries without a passport and lived in different cultures while growing up in the US: Azhar Usman, Bassem Youssef, Hasan Minhaj, Ramy Youssef and independent rapper Brother Ali all dive at Legally Homeless.
