According to the Sheriff’s Office, a mother was charged with first-degree murder on July 12 in a shocking incident that has rocked New Mexico. Investigators from the Lea County Sheriff’s Office have issued an arrest warrant for Mary Johnson, 49, for fatally stabbing her son Bruce Johnson Jr., 11, in the chest.
Her home in North Dal Pasco was the scene, Bruce’s father, Bruce Johnson Sr., reported Sunday. Johnson contacted 911 after discovering his wife and son were bleeding from stab wounds.

Mary and Johnson Sr. divorced, and the former had a history of violent and abusive treatment of her son. Realizing this, Johnson Sr. made the decision to leave her and planned to eventually divorce her.
They relocated to Hobbs from Oklahoma, where she was repeatedly accused of molesting her child. Bruce was separated from his mother for around 40 days before she finally insisted on seeing him. Before filing for divorce, Johnson visited her in Oklahoma after agreeing.
Johnson slept soundly the night of the horrific incident until he was startled by his son’s screams and rushed to another room. The moment Bruce’s father called 911 and saw him lying on the bed with another stab wound, he also saw his wife lying in another room. Around 1:00 a.m., after the complaint was received from the sheriff’s deputies, the mother and son couple were taken to Covenant Hobbs Hospital while Bruce was still alive. Bruce accused his mother of stabbing him at this point, and at 4:19 a.m. he died. The 11-year-old’s stabbings were confirmed by the autopsy conducted in Albuquerque.
One of Bruce’s classmates’ fathers told News 12 that Mary had shown signs of instability for a very long time. After March’s Kingston tornado, which she described as “God’s vengeance,” her peculiarities only became clearer. She said things like, “Talking about being Mary Jesus and just weird things, talking about hurting other people,” he added.
As of July 11, the mother’s condition remained critical, according to the KRQE. Potential witnesses have already been interviewed by investigators, but no arrests have been made so far. After inflicting her son’s fatal wounds, Mary repeatedly stabbed herself.
As soon as the sheriff’s office released its statement, which provided a thorough account of the crime, prayers for Bruce began pouring in. Even one Facebook user wrote: “This is why we don’t let abusers back in; I’m not trying to embarrass the father at all. The boy probably had the best 40 days of his life in the 40 days Mom didn’t see him. Thank god, sir.”
