The death of 23-year-old jockey Avery Whisman has plunged the American racing industry into a state of grief, and his family have expressed hope that the tragedy “could benefit someone else”.
Despite the mental and physical strain that a lifelong job in the saddle entailed, he continued to ride into 2022.
During his three-year career, Whisman rode the winning horses in 90 out of 810 races. He also developed a close friendship with the great driver Mike Smith, who later paid tribute to him by calling him his “little brother”.
Emma, his sister, is quoted as saying, “We have no shame in what happened and we hope that the lessons we learn from this tragedy will benefit someone else.” We never want, that someone else has to endure the misery we are going through right now.
“He had a heart the size of a mountain and he wanted everyone to know that they loved and cherished him.”
He had an incredible talent for working with horses and other animals. Everyone around him was aware of how much affection there was for her.

Jockey Avery Whisman: Early Life
While growing up in Kentucky, Whisman’s parents instilled in him a love of horses, which he later passed on to them.
After moving to California in 2018, Whisman began training as a jockey.
While he trained with well-known trainer Carla Gaines, he developed a particularly close friendship with Smith, who not only helped him launch his career but also gave him the saddle he rode to victory in the 2005 Kentucky Derby Giacomo.
He rode consistently before taking a two-year vacation that began in August 2020 and lasted through May 2022. Upon his return, he continued to work as a jockey at Presque Isle Downs in Pennsylvania, where he set a record with 16 wins from a total of 93 starts .
His mother, Salli Whisman, said of her son: “He was an excellent athlete and very determined. If he set his mind to something, he not only did it, but of course he was good at it.”
Positive results are achieved when a natural athlete is combined with exceptional determination. Avery was highly motivated and had an optimistic attitude.
“He was a huge fan of the sport and lived for the rush of excitement. He looked forward to waking up first thing in the morning and riding as many horses as possible.
Whenever he mounted a level-headed horse, his favorite pastime was to find a quiet moment on the track as the sun was rising to give the horse a chance to stand and breathe and have some extra time outside the stable, than would otherwise be the case.
Smith expressed his condolences for the loss of his younger brother in a tweet that read, “RIP my little brother you will always be so adored.”
His sisters, Clare McCabe, Caitlin Pinkney-Atkinson and Emma Whisman, and his parents, Lyman and Salli, will carry on his legacy after his death. A memorial service will be held Monday at the residence he shared with his family in Versailles, Kentucky.

Last year, Whisman won 16 of his bets. The reason for his death is unknown. Whisman, who had previously competed in three-day events and followed in his parents’ footsteps by taking up the sport, made the decision to switch to racing.
He spent his childhood in the Keeneland Racecourse area and eventually began riding horses for trainer Joan Scott who taught him how to be a jockey.
In addition to Smith, Whisman met champion jockey Joe Talamo, who was based in California.
“Being around someone like Mike, who’s a total pro and so focused and so good at what he does, inspired me to strive to be that way,” Whisman said in an interview with the Maryland Jockey Club .

“He’s absolutely perfect in every way. They offer useful guides and other things, but it’s encouraging and motivating to watch them carry themselves and go about their work.
The last win for Whisman came in August last year for Matthew Kintz on Indian Spider. At the end of the month he took part in his last ride for the same owner and trainer at Presque Isle Downs.
During the $100,000 Karl Boyes Stakes at the same venue, Whisman set a new course record with Surely Furious. Over the course of his riding career, his mounts have won a total of $2,715,109 in prize money.

Horse racing fans joined Smith to pay their respects to the brilliant jockey, who also competed at the 2017 Junior Olympics on an off-track thoroughbred he trained.
One person expressed their concern, writing, “My heart breaks for Avery Whisman and his family.” He is only 22 years old and has a promising career ahead of him.
