Martha Karagianni was born in 1939 in the city of Athens, Greece. Her family originally came from the Pontic region. Both of her parents were born in different cities; Her father Harilaos came from Ekaterinedar and her mother Domna from Baku. She was born in Athens but spent her childhood on the island of Keratsini.
She began her dance training at the age of eight and performed on the Lyric Stage by the age of twelve as a member of Loukia Sakellaropoulou’s children’s ballet company (along with Eleni Prokopiou).
She made her acting debut in the film The Unknown, produced by Finos Films and directed by Oresti Laskou, when she was only 17 years old. The exam was conducted at Fino’s Studios, where it was also taken by Aristidis Karydis Fuchs and Dino Katsouridis.
She had some success both on stage and in the film industry, but her breakthrough came in the early 1960s. She began her acting career by participating in a number of films directed by her mentor Giannis Dalianidis.
