Referring to Ezra Klein’s “intellectual training” at Brown, Hayes said: “I majored in philosophy, but I was very strong in that kind of analytic school. But postmodern criticism, especially Foucault, had a major impact on the intellectual culture of the place I was and the people I was with.” It was at Brown that Hayes met Kate Shaw, who would become his wife.

On May 27, 2012, during the Memorial Day holiday weekend, Hayes spoke about using the word “I’m uncomfortable with the word ‘heroism’ when it’s used to describe American soldiers killed in the field,” he said. “It seems to me that it comes so close to arguments for more war.” And I don’t want to dishonor or disregard anyone’s memory, and I know there are isolated instances of real, great heroism, like saving comrades from a hail of bullets. But I think we use that word in a way that makes it difficult to understand. But I could be wrong.” His statement caused a lot of trouble. Hayes initially tried to defend his comment by telling people to listen to what he actually said. Nevertheless, he wrote an apology on his blog. He also spoke about his comments and the difference between civilians and military on his June 2, 2012 show.
