Nicole VanderHeyden reportedly had a sexual relationship with her 35-year-old boyfriend Douglass Detrie, whose heartbreaking death story is covered in Dateline: Unforgettable Season 2 Episode 11.
The couple shared a residence in Ledgeview, Wisconsin and had one child together who was just 6 months old when she died. At first, the couple seemed a wonderful match with their loved ones and had a good connection. But as time went on, the tension between the two grew.
In the past, they were often involved in contentious disagreements and fights. The couple reportedly began to have doubts about their union. On May 20, 2016, Douglass and Nicole hired a babysitter to look after their child while they went out with their close friends to see a glam rock band at a bar.
Unfortunately, the couple also had a big argument at the pub that night. According to Sgt. Tracy Holschbach, the Brown County Sheriff:
“They were drinking, and during the night Doug ran into some old high school buddies he hadn’t seen in a while.
He confirmed Nikki’s anger that Doug was talking to another woman [the bar called] The water hole. And that essentially triggered it.”
Nicole and her boyfriend had a heated argument at the pub, so Nicole went to Sardine Can’s instead. Apparently she didn’t come home that evening.

Another man named George S. Burch drove Nicole home that same night. The man was 40 years old when the incident happened. Burch forced her to accept him, and when she resisted him, he brutally beat her before suffocating her.
Afterward, the man left her body in a field three miles from the victim’s home in Wisconsin. Later, a pawn came over her unidentifiable body.
