83-year-old Dick Vitale is a native of Passaic, New Jersey, and a basketball sports reporter. He has been a college basketball announcer for ESPN for an impressive 41 years.
In 1958 he got his first job as a coach at an elementary school in Garfield, New Jersey. Over time, he advanced through high school and served as the head coach at Garfield High School for one season.
In 1971 he moved to Rutgers University, where he worked as an assistant coach for Dick Lloyd. In 1973 he became head coach at the University of Detroit.
In 1977 he led 32 teams from Detroit to the NCAA tournament. When he was in charge of the team, they went 78-30. In 1977 they won 21 games in a row.

In the 1980s, Dick Vitale’s supporters were rude to him, repeatedly calling him and yelling, “ESPN should let that crazy one-eyed person go. His eyes move around the room.”
He called his boss Steve Anderson, who was then the vice president of production. He thought about leaving the TV business and making the station look bad.
Anderson told him that he was chosen for the team because of his basketball knowledge and enthusiasm, not because of his looks. That calmed him down.
One day his daughters went to Dr. Conrad Giles to have her eyes checked. dr Giles said he could stop my eyes from wandering, but they couldn’t be fixed.
Vitale goes ahead with the surgery despite Anderson’s opposition. His problem with his wandering eyes was fixed and he was then given contact lenses.
