Explains the Raphael Adolini 1715 pistol in the loot
The fifth entry in the Predator film series is titled “Prey”. The film acts as a prologue to the previous four films and is set in September 1919 on the Northern Great Plains. Also, this film aims to reboot the entire franchise. The 1715 Raphael Adolini handgun given to the film’s protagonist, Naru, by the French fur hunter known as Waxed Mustache, is one of the Easter eggs that ties the Hulu film to those before it. How important is the Raphael Adolini 1715 pistol?
In the movie “Prey,” a young Comanche warrior named Naru embarks on a long trek in search of some formidable Predator or Yautja prey. She discovers traps set in various locations throughout the film and eventually meets the culprits – a gang of French fur trappers. They capture her and after speaking to her in her own language, Waxed Mustache instructs her to help them kill the thing. However, she decides to get revenge on them after seeing how the other fur trappers treated her brother. Waxed Mustache lends her his flintlock pistol in exchange for her help treating his wounds when she later visits the Trappers’ camp to rescue her pup. Before being defeated by Naru himself, the Predator murders the Trappers, including Waxed Mustache and Naru’s brother. The main character then returns home and hands over the Predator’s head and pistol to the leader of their clan. At this point we see the writing “Raphael Adolini 1715” on it.
The Predator film series contains at least two instances of this pistol. It is a Spanish-made flintlock pistol that once belonged to pirate leader Raphael Adolini. The inscription indicates that it was created in 1715. In the comic book “Predator: 1718” which appeared in the first issue of the special anniversary anthology series “A Decade of Dark Horse” published by Dark Horse Comics in July 1996. The plot follows Adolini as he fights off the crew mutiny and in the Predator discovers an unlikely friend who eventually takes the name Greyback. Together, Adolini and Greyback fight against the mutinous pirates. Adolini eventually suffers a fatal injury. He gives the pistol to Greyback before dying.
Greyback and the gun reappear in Predator 2. It was released in 1990 but is set in 1997. Greyback and other members of his kind appear after Mike Harrigan (Danny Glover) kills the Predator known as the City Hunter, and they present the gun to Harrigan out of respect.
There are some plot holes introduced by the introduction of the gun in Prey. In 1718 Adolini gave Greyback the pistol. It doesn’t make much sense for Waxed Mustache to get the pistol from Greyback in the meantime considering the events of “Prey” take place just a year later. The predators are a strong species. It is extremely doubtful that Waxed Mustache, as portrayed in the film, could do anything to gain the respect of the Predator race.
Furthermore, since the weapon is already in human hands in 1997, can we conclude that Harrigan did not receive it from Greyback? Future developments in the series could see Greyback getting his gun back and keeping the canon. The lines of war between humans and predators could be redrawn as part of the reboot process, which is possible in this case as well. It’s possible that the man introduced to us as the waxed mustache is Adolini or a reimagined version of him.
