Turnbull was born on January 25, 1956 in Guildford, Surrey. His father was English with Scottish roots and his mother was also English. He went to Eton College and the University of Edinburgh, where he edited the student newspaper. In 1978 he graduated from Cardiff University.
Career
In 1978, Turnbull began his career at a small radio station in Scotland called Radio Clyde. He later worked as a freelancer in the USA for a few years.

In 2008 he took over as manager of weekday breakfasts, replacing Dermot Murnaghan and rejoining Robbie Williams. In this experiment, he slept a total of three hours each day, but only 30 minutes at a time. He did this ten days in a row. In November 2006 he and other BBC News presenters gave a performance for Children in Need.
