While Sekiya is gone, Ushiyama climbs out of his coffin and heads outside, despite the datura putting him to sleep. He later meets Chiyotarou, the young son of a rich miner who is being forced to eat grass moss by children his own age. They leave him tied to a tree, and when he sees Ushiyama, he tells him that if he helps him, he will give him food.
Then, still drunk from the Datura, Ushiyama follows Chiyotarou everywhere. When Sekiya finds out he has escaped, he reckons the Datura will keep him from being himself for at least 12 more hours, and even then he won’t be able to remember where he’s been hiding. Chiyotarou, on the other hand, soon realizes that Ushiyama can be dangerous and decides to get rid of him.
Chiyotarou takes him to the lake and tricks him into going into a hole in the ice so that he drowns there and dies. Kirawus is hiding on the other side of the lake, and Kadokura plans to deliberately screw up negotiations with Sekiya so the two can follow him back to his lair if he runs away. Although everything initially goes exactly according to plan, the datura effect wears off when Ushiyama emerges from a hole in the frozen lake right in front of Sekiya.
Kirawus and Kadokura are also surprised to see Ushiyama there and they try to figure out how he got there. Meanwhile, Sekiya escapes, thinking he avoided getting caught. But Kadokura finds the serial killer with the help of the information he gets about kakon breeding.

How do Hijikita and Kadokura survive the end of Season 4 Episode 2 of Golden Kamuy?
When Kadokura and Sekiya finally meet at the place where the serial killer is experimenting with cocoons, Sekiya does what he always does and invites the former warden to a “test of fate.” Although they face each other, a machine with kakons rotates between them. Sekiya tells Kadokura that half of them are poisoned with potassium cyanide, arsenic, strychnine, fugu tetrodotoxin, and wolfsbane, while the other half are pure. He is interested in the fates of strong-willed people and argues that if the former jailer is on the right track, fate will eventually be on his side.
Waichirou also says that if he eats the poisoned kakon, he will tell Kadokura where he hid Hijikita. When Kadokura is about to die, Sekiya will rescue Hijikita before Kadokura’s coffin loses air. Although Kadokura knows he always makes bad decisions in these situations and that luck is never on his side, the fact that Hijikita is safe in both cases is more than enough to convince him to play the dangerous game . So they both eat a cacoon, and Kadokura starts sweating profusely and falls to the ground some time later.
Sekiya says if the poison took 10 minutes to take effect then he must have eaten the kakon with the wolfsbane inside. This also means he will be in pain for a few hours before dying. As he said, Sekiya goes straight to the room where he buried Hijikita to save his life. But to his surprise, the Shinsengumi leader comes out of his coffin as if nothing happened and grabs Sekiya by the collar.
It turns out that Hijikita was selling medicine when he was young and purposely ate just the right amount of the wolfsbane-laced kakon so it wouldn’t kill him. In the other room, Kadokura selects another kakon, and it just so happens to be the one containing Fugu Tetrodotoxin. The Fugu Tetrodotoxin and Wolfsbane cancel each other out, of course, so it saves his life as well.

When Hijikita finally comes out of his grave, he uses a butcher knife to cut Sekiya’s neck. Then he grabs him by the collar and tells him how he survived the test of death and fate of the serial killer. He has a deep cut on his throat and Hijikita knows it will kill him, so he lets Sekiya go outside in his terrible state. As soon as the serial killer left the facility, he fell onto the ice. He knew his death was near.
A long time ago, Sekiya’s daughter was killed by lightning while she and her father were walking. Ever since, he’s struggled with the fact that he somehow got through, which meant to him that God doesn’t exist. His trials were always designed to help him deal with and solve his religious problems. Now that Sekiya was on the brink of death, he was shocked to find out that Hijikita had made a living by plucking wolfsbane from other poisoned kakons and eating just enough of it to keep him alive.
