Six minutes later, Mlby was at the center of another attack. Getting the ball into Everton’s box, he sent in a cross that Craig Johnston headed in for a goal. The score was now 2-1 but the game was still tight until Ronnie Whelan led another attack in the 84th minute. As time was running out, he picked up the ball and drove to the edge of Everton’s area. Dalglish ran across his path to get some space but Whelan used it as a distraction, passing the ball over three Everton defenders to Rush, who chipped past Mimms from the corner of the six yards. Liverpool won 3-1 to win both the league and the FA Cup for the first time in club history. Added the Man of the Match award to Rush’s Victor’s Medal. However, English clubs were still barred from entering European competitions, leaving Liverpool unable to participate in the 1986–87 European Cup.
