Eight months later, he was thrown out of the army for smoking weed, which was considered a bad deed.

He then started working at a mall in Gary, where he met Finger Roll, a local hip-hop producer who Gibbs says was “the only guy with a studio.” Gibbs then joined Finger Roll’s No Tamin Entertainment crew and began rapping.

Career

Gibbs began his rap career in 2004 when he self-released his first full-length project, a mixtape called Full Metal Jackit. He released a sequel that same year. It was around this time that he was signed to Interscope Records and began work on his first studio album. But in late 2006, when the person who signed him, Joe Weinberger, left the label, he was dropped. Gibbs’ first extended play, Str8 Killa, was released in August 2010.

He kept releasing his own mixtapes until 2011, when he signed to Young Jeezy’s record label CTE World. Gibbs announced on his website in February of the same year that he had teamed up with King Chip and The Cool Kids to form the supergroup Pulled Over by the Cops (POC). In October, he released a mixtape titled “Cold Day in Hell.” Guests included Young Jeezy, Juicy J and 2 Chainz. The mixtape garnered a lot of attention from magazines like Pitchfork and XXL, who put it on their Freshman List Class of 2010. Gibbs announced on December 11, 2012 that he was no longer part of Young Jeezy’s CTE label. He went on to say that the two rappers had nothing against each other. On May 27, 2013, Freddie Gibbs announced that his debut album ESGN (Evil Seeds Grow Naturally) would be released on July 9, 2013 through his own eponymous record label. Due to a leak, the album was released three weeks earlier, on June 20th, instead of as planned.

Deeper, the final EP in the Piata Previews trilogy, was released in September 2013. It was produced by Freddie Gibbs and Madlib. Piata was finally released to the public on March 18, 2014. The album received a score of 82 on the Metacritic review site, meaning music critics loved it. It reached number 39 on the US Billboard 200 and number seven on the US Top Rap Albums chart. Gibbs, Young Thug and ASAP Ferg released a single called “Old English” on July 1, 2014. It was produced by Salva and Nick Hook and on July 23, 2020, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) announced it was Gold for having sold more than 500,000 certified units. After first being announced in May 2016, Gibbs and Madlib’s second collaborative album Bandana was released in June 2019. The singles “Flat Tummy Tea” and “Bandana”, both featuring dancehall artist Assassin, were released in February and March of that year.
