Law & Order: Organized Crime: Is Denise Bullock Leaving?
At the beginning of the show, Denise and Ayanna have a very loving relationship. However, as the show progresses, this relationship, built on mutual love and respect, begins to fall apart. At the end of the second season, they are no longer together and Ayanna has many problems. In a September 2022 interview with Looper, Truitt spoke about where her character was at the time.
“Unfortunately, Season 3 still has a lot of issues,” Truitt said. “Her husband left her and took the child with him. As Season 3 begins, she deals with her divorce and how her life has changed now that Denise and Jack are no longer living with her. She is now preparing to be a single mom and lead a task force.
Truitt continued, “They’ve added two new people to the task force and when you add new people you always have to make a few changes. Bell tries to get her life together and realizes that it takes two people to make a marriage work and that one person cannot make a marriage fail. Bell has to take a good look at herself to find out how she damaged the marriage.
Detectives on Dick Wolf shows almost always have to choose between their jobs and their relationships. If the character stays on the show, it means she has given up on her relationship. If they choose to have a relationship, the characters will almost certainly get killed. In fact, Denise and Ayanna have a similar conversation where Denise says that Ayanna only cares about her career.
Denise broke up with Ayanna, not the other way around. So Denise’s claim that Ayanna left her and her child makes no sense. “Bell and Denise are not newlyweds, but they have been married for less than five years. And they’re moms,” Truitt told TVLine in April 2022. When you get married and have children, the way you and your partner relate to each other changes. In the case of Bell and Denise, it was Denise who carried the baby. She stopped working and put her life on hold so they could have this child. And Bell helped Denise conceive what she wanted.
Since Dukes is in the second episode of Season 3, it’s possible that she’s still a big part of the cast, even if her appearances aren’t as regular as they were before Season 2.
Denise wakes up and tells Ayanna she’s worried about her relationship with Stabler while they’re both in bed. Denise says it could harm her unborn child and the family they will start together. Denise comes to the police station and waits for Bell in her office. When Bell reaches the police station, she sees Denise in her office. Jack, their son, was born to Denise. After putting Jack to sleep, Denise tells Bell that she received a call from Congressman Kilbride, who wants to discuss Damon’s lawsuit against the NYPD and wants to meet with them to discuss more. He knows that she is married to a police officer and wants to use that fact to change the way they talk about police misconduct. Bell can see where this is going, but Denise thinks Kilbride is one of the good guys, so she agrees to meet him. (Original: “The Man With No Name”)

Bell tells Denise that she doesn’t want her to take Kilbride’s job offer because Jack is too young. Denise doesn’t agree with Bell, and she’s hurt that he doesn’t want to help her find her dream job. Unbeknownst to Denise, this is because Kilbride is a high-level member of the Marcy Killers that Bell is currently investigating and Bell is trying to keep her out of jail because Kilbride is probably trying to get Denise to do something illegal and use them against Bell too. (Original: “Can’t Knock the Hustle”)
Denise and Bell argue a lot about the job offer Kilbride offered Denise at his old company. Bell then tells Denise that she and her task force have been investigating Kilbride’s connection to the Marcy Killers for months. Bell tells Denise that Kilbride is connected to organized crime, and Denise tells Bell that she needs to go where she’s wanted. Bell then agrees to come home early and take care of Jack while Denise has some time to herself. Later, when Bell comes home late, Denise tells her that she needs to meet her new boss. Denise then tells Bell that she accepted the job offer from Kilbride. Denise tells Bell she’s given up enough and Bell tells Denise to calm down. (Original content: “Dead Presidents”)
Denise was furious with Bell after seeing her go into Kilbride’s law office and arrest Kilbride for his crimes. She told Bell that she hopes she is happy. Later, when Bell goes home, he calls for Denise, who isn’t there, and finds a note from her. In the note, Denise Bell says their relationship isn’t working and that she’s keeping Jack temporarily. (OC: “Friend or Foe”)
After Kilbride’s arrest, Denise and Bell separated. When Bell went to see Denise, she told him she couldn’t believe they were getting a divorce. Denise tells Bell that she used to be a wife and mother but left those jobs. Later, Bell tells Stabler how she feels about Denise. Bell tells Stabler that Denise may have been right and that she was probably a bad wife. But Stabler tells Bell that he was married a long time and that it only worked because of Kathy.
