Reginald the Vampire: Storyline
You can get an idea of the film’s potential by watching the official teaser trailer. Reginald is a regular guy who is forced to take a job at a convenience store. He wants to figure out how to change the hand he’s been dealt because he doesn’t like it. When the opportunity arises, he seizes it, allowing himself to be transformed from a mysterious stranger into one of the many ordinary vampires in the world. However, the vampire elite are not so willing to accept his membership.
Reginald must “feed” (i.e. drink blood) to stay alive, but he is too shy to attack unwitting victims; Instead, he pays a guy up to $50 to make him bleed. The series’ choice of protagonists creates the expectation that it will follow the pattern of subverted clichés. In popular culture, vampires are typically white, beautiful, and confident. Despite their reputation as vampires, they are considered “perfect”. By including a character of color who doesn’t look like the usual vampire, Batalon gives the show an opportunity to vary its portrayal of vampires. While vampire fiction has lost some of its appeal of late, this show at least brings some much-needed humor and variety to the genre.
Reginald the Vampire: Cast
While most of the content of Reginald the Vampire is still unknown, Syfy has secured a household name that will surely draw some Marvel fans. Jacob Batalon, who portrays Spider-Best Man Ned’s boyfriend in the MCU, will play series lead character Reginald Baskins. Beyond that, not much is known about Reginald other than the fact that he was a typical, albeit overweight, mortal man who turned into a typical, albeit ugly, undead monster.
However, we’re still unsure who took on the roles of the remaining zombie soldiers in Reginald the Vampire. We know that Reginald is being thrust into a new world of incredibly attractive, physically fit vampires who don’t seem to think much of him given his looks and abilities. Nobody knows how these attractive vampires will compare to the other top vampires on TV. Whatever Syfy throws to play them will make Reginald’s (if any) performance all the more enjoyable.
Reginald the Vampire: Review
Someone at Syfy must have at some point discussed Johnny Truant’s Fat Vampire novel series and realized that while they were worth adapting, the name was too obscene. The result is Reginald the Vampire, an utterly awkward and stupid attempt at comedy that should never have seen the light of day. It changes the name and a large part of the plot but keeps all the fat shame.
Spider-Man sidekick Jacob Batalon tries to establish himself as a leading man by playing Reginald Baskin, a likeable but insecure man saddled with student loans and trapped in a meaningless job in a seedy store. He has chosen Henry Ford as his highly dubious self-help hero as he attempts to transform his life, beginning with dating his office crush, Sarah Kinney (Em Haine). The vampire Maurice (Mandela van Peebles), who bizarrely chooses to tutor Reginald instead of consuming him, actually gives Reginald the courage to make his move. Reginald’s life ends up being affected much more than he expected when Maurice’s enemies interfere.
This setup is not necessarily bad. If Reginald the Vampire had been written by another author, it might have been a fun fish-out-of-water tale similar to What We Do in the Shadows from new vampire Nick’s point of view. Nothing about this show really works, however, as it juggles romantic and supernatural comedy clichés, awkwardly builds its mythology, and makes even worse attempts at adding emotional drama.
