Is there any truth about the history of the stars at noon?
No, Stars at Noon’s plot is not inspired by real events. The film is an adaptation of writer Denis Johnson’s bestselling novel of the same name, which was published in 1986. The well-known novel tells the story of an unknown journalist who works as a prostitute in a hotel at the time of the Nicaraguan revolution in 1984. While working there, she meets an English businessman, which leads to the development of a romantic relationship between the two. On the other hand, the film, directed by Claire Denis, is set in modern times and is based on a screenplay she co-wrote with Léa Mysius and Andrew Litvack.
Johnson wrote the novel based on experiences he had traveling through Costa Rica and Nicaragua around 1984. The author originally intended to write a factual report for a magazine, but changed her mind when she realized that writing fictional tropes would make more money and be more recognizable to readers. It is interesting to note that he does not name the characters in the work and refers to the background of the Nicaraguan riots as depicting Hell. Johnson chose not to name his protagonists and let them fall in love while disguising their identities as he saw fit since hell is mostly meaningless.

This was done to make the story more relatable to a modern audience. To preserve the film’s authenticity, the director originally intended to shoot on location in Nicaragua; However, given the current political climate in Nicaragua, he ultimately chose to shoot in Panama instead. Also, Denis decided to give names to the story’s protagonists to create a sense of security and familiarity in the reader.
