Storyline of “The Railroad Kids Return”
During the course of the Second World War in 1944 a new wave of bombing was launched against the United Kingdom. The Watts siblings, 14-year-old Lily, 11-year-old Pattie and 7-year-old Ted, are taken from Manchester to the West Riding of Yorkshire village of Oakworth. There they are greeted by Bobbie Waterbury, their daughter Annie, their teacher, and their 13-year-old grandson Thomas. The community decides to adopt each of the children, but the Watts siblings are the only ones not adopted due to a government order not to separate siblings. When no one else is taking them in, Bobbie is happy to take care of them at their home. The siblings develop a close relationship with Thomas from an early age. There is a US Army base in the area, and there is a riot on the first night. As the children explored their new surroundings, they were attacked by a gang of local children, unhappy with their presence. Thomas invited the children to his hideout, an old brake van at the train station.
Annie is shocked to learn that her husband, who is currently serving in the war, has received tragic news as she brings back painful memories of the deaths of Bobby’s father and brother during the First World War. The teenagers give her some space and play hide and seek in the train station. During their time there, they discover an African American soldier named Abe McCarthy hiding in their enclave with a leg injury. He claims that he is involved in an undercover operation and that it is imperative that he not be discovered. Lily is knocked unconscious that evening by a bomb dropped on the town’s graveyard by a single enemy plane. She was on her way to see Abe at the time with a first aid kit and other supplies. She is rescued by him and he tells that he has enlisted in the military to seek revenge for his brother who was killed in battle. However, some facts about its history make you skeptical. The next day, white American military police come to the school looking for Abe, and Lily finds out that he has deserted and is now wanted by them. When she confronts him about it, Abe admits that he is actually only 14 years old and is trying to return home after seeing how the US Army treats his black comrades, who are often beaten by MPs. And this despite the fact that the city’s residents have rejected the US authorities’ request to impose a color ban in the local pub. When she confronts him about it, Abe admits he’s trying to return home after seeing how the US Army treats his black comrades. [a] She agrees to help him evade capture.
When Thomas finds out that Lily has told the others and plans to keep Abe hidden in the house, he initially insists that they confess the truth to the adults. Lily immediately knocks him out and calls him out on his ignorance of the reality of the world. She then reveals that during her exchange with him, her father was also killed in battle. Abe will reside in the spacious closet adjoining Thomas’ bedroom, per Thomas’ agreement. That evening, the family is visited by Walter, a remarried husband who was previously married to Bobby’s sister, Phyllis. The next day, Lily accompanies Abe and Thomas to the train station so they can board a train to Liverpool. Thomas accompanies them to create a distraction and ensure they can board the train unnoticed. As a result, he is arrested by local police, who then alert the United States Military Police, who then stop and search the train further up. After Abe and Lily are tied up and taken to the military facility, they are then taken onto a US Army supply train along with high-ranking officials.
Annie confesses to Thomas, who questions her about the incident, that although his father’s plane was shot down, he is alive and being held in a POW camp. Thomas confronts Annie about the situation. After telling Walter everything, his uncle tells him about the American supply train, which his uncle found out about by calling his place of work, the War Office. Walter is surprised to hear this news. Just as Bobby and her siblings had done thirty years earlier, Thomas gathers Pattie, Ted and the rest of the local and evacuee youth to display banners warning the train to stop. The children successfully try to stop the train and confront the Americans about their behavior. When the top African American general, who is also Abe’s superior, learns the truth, he admits that he too joined the military at a young age and issues a warrant for Abe’s release. After spending a few days with the family, Abe eventually returns to his own, but not before vowing to write Lily a letter before leaving. At the end of three months, each of the children goes back to live with their mother, while Thomas’ father returns after VE day.
What happens in The Railway Children Return?
The story follows Lily, Pattie and Tedd Watts, three children whose mother resettled them in the Yorkshire town of Oakworth in the middle of the Second World War. The Watts children are Lily’s cousin, Pattie’s sister, and Tedd’s brother. The children are able to successfully adjust to their new life with the help of some friends who already knew them in the hamlet. However, when the youngsters find a young injured American soldier at the rail yard, they are thrown into a risky operation to help their new friend. Now that I’ve got your attention, let me cover all of the different ways you can watch the dysfunctional family movie.
Locomotives that run on steam
The film primarily uses three steam locomotives: 5820 USA Transportation Corp, Class S160 (often affectionately referred to as “Big Jim”), 43924 LMS Class 4F, and 45596 “Bahamas” LMS Jubilee Class. Additionally, 78022 BR Standard Class 2 2-6-0 makes a very brief cameo appearance in the film. During filming of this film, ‘Bahamas’ was livery in British Railways green livery, but the correct LMS decals can still be seen on the tender. BR did not come into being until 1948. Also its BR number was changed from 45596 to the correct 5596 used when the engine was working for the LMS. 43924, also bearing the British Railways identity and sporting a plain black livery, had the BR crest overlaid with LMS decals and changed the number 43924 to 3924. The BR number of 45596 was changed from 45596 to the correct 5596 which was used as the engine worked for the LMS. To celebrate the launch of the film, Hornby Railways created an OO scale model of 43924 LMS Class 4F and packaged it in a unique box.
