The Cuban ace developed his skills at home, competing in a prestigious amateur tournament before moving to the professional circuit. So far he has been responsible for forming 19 world champions and on Saturday he will assist his prize pupil Jorge Linares.

On June 17, 1957, Salas was born in Guantanamo, the youngest of six children. His early years in the communist state were uneventful and at the same time not quite as difficult as for others. He first became interested in boxing when he was nine years old.

Since his father worked for the US government in Guantanamo, they had a challenging life. Despite the challenges they experienced, they were able to live well thanks to the money his father earned.

He championed the college he had previously attended after earning a degree in physical education. Salas competed at the tricky amateur circuit in Cuba between 1971 and 1978, finishing 46-5.

Salas wanted to switch from boxing to coaching when he was 21. He praised Jose Maria Chivas, his former coach, as an excellent educator. Salas was the head trainer at Guantanamo for a total of about 13 years and oversaw the training program.
