Last week’s great episode of Los Angeles, California’s The Last of Us focused on Bill and Frank’s beautiful relationship and how they survived the post-apocalyptic world on nothing but love.
Joel learned from the letter he and Ellie found at Bill and Frank’s home that he needs someone to take care of to survive in this harsh world.

While some viewers might find this episode a bit slow, it still manages to maintain the excellent quality that The Last of Us has become known for. In the latest episode, Please Hold My Hand, Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie continue their journey and make plans for the future.
They take a break between some trees and stay there all night. The next morning they start the hike and Joel encourages Ellie to keep looking at the map so they might find the easiest route to Wyoming.
However, things get strange when they discover that a tunnel leading to the freeway has been blocked by many vehicles. After looking around, Joel suggests they take a different route and head back to the road.

The Last of Us: Joel and Ellie’s connection
But when Joel realizes they’re in danger because members of Kathleen’s gang, The Hunters, are surrounding them, everything turns upside down (Melanie Lynskey).
A man tries to seek help from them as they start driving away from the scene, making it look like he’s injured. Joel thought it was a trap, and it was.
Some members of the group ambushed her and forced her to abandon her car. Luckily, Joel and Ellie managed to kill her, but they now had to keep walking to stay safe.
Although there are no action-packed scenes in this episode, it still manages to set the mood and set the scene for the events that will take place in the following episodes.
However, as both continue to develop as people, it’s fun to see Joel and Ellie’s relationship. The couple has also started working together and caring for each other.
Kathleen, the ruthless captain of The Hunters, was also introduced to the audience in Please Hold My Hand. The persona possesses both compassion and vulnerability.
She looks like a fantastic addition to the show and her presence implies that Joel and Ellie will face many risky and challenging circumstances in the weeks to come. Of course we would want to see Kathleen and Joel fighting each other.
It’s fun to watch Joel and Ellie’s relationship develop.
The “awkwardly humorous” gags Ramsey tells throughout the episode are brutally excellent and show why she’s still the heart and soul of the show. Ellie makes Joel giggle and brightens the mood with her “No Pun Intended: Volume Too.”
This is exactly what we had hoped for from the start. Pedro Pascal, on the other hand, is absolutely captivating. There isn’t a single flaw in his portrayal of Joel.
However, Melanie Lynskey’s portrayal of Kathleen steals the show and is a fantastic addition to the cast. We’re interested in how this persona increases the tension between the two and the audience.
Overall, The Last of Us Episode 4 focuses more on construction and teaches viewers a lot about the neighborhood and its residents. Joel and Ellie’s friendship grows stronger and they become more intimate. However, to make a lasting impact, we undoubtedly want The Hunters to be as immersive as they were in-game.

The Last of Us: Episodes
It appears that not much will happen this week for a significant portion of The Last of Us episode and that we may only see The Chill Road-Trip Adventures of Joel and Ellie this week. They’re recording a little Hank Williams.
Ellie learns from Joel how to siphon gas out of parked cars, but she gives him a wicked grin and says, “You don’t know” when he clumsily tries to explain the physics involved.
They consume some ravioli from Chef Boyardee from 20 years ago. (Great!) Ellie taunts Joel with jokes like “What did the mermaid wear in her math class?” after spotting a book of puns at a gas station. A seaweed bra
But the fun can’t last forever. About a third into the episode, our heroes come across a blocked road in Kansas City. As they try to find another way through downtown, they are ambushed and then caught in the crossfire of a militia power struggle.
They destroy Bill’s truck in the first brawl. They probably should have driven through Des Moines, all things considered.
As the credits begin to roll, there’s still a lot we don’t know about the situation Joel and Ellie are in. We know that the KC militia is stationed in a quarantine zone that FEDRA has abandoned and that their armored vehicles are there with the slogan “WE THE PEOPLE”.
We are aware that their manager, Kathleen (Melanie Lynskey), executed her former family doctor due to her extreme cold.
We are aware that Kathleen is looking for FEDRA “collaborators” and that as part of her mission she is looking for Henry who is with Sam: a young boy who is said to be drawing pictures of Henry and himself as superheroes.
We are aware that Henry and Sam have been hiding out in a structure of late with the concrete base cracking and bending, possibly as a result of underground Cordyceps/Infected activity. We also know that Joel and Ellie will have to deal with the two guns next week after the episode’s cliffhanger.
The Last of Us: Review
- What was most relevant to the story this week was that the troubles in Kansas City deepened Joel and Ellie’s friendship, leading them to be more honest with each other, which is a very safe assumption considering there are five left episodes are left.
- After shooting himself out of immediate danger, Joel is attacked by an attacker who nearly kills him by choking him. Ellie shoots the attacker but doesn’t kill him as she can no longer hide her gun. One of the cats is now out of the bag.
- In an apparent attempt to humanize himself, the attacker introduces himself as Brian and begs for his life before telling Ellie, “We can hook up with you! We can get along!” — Ellie is reluctant to kill him.
- However, Joel has experience in the survival game. Elle’s gun is taken from him and he orders her to hide behind a wall so she doesn’t witness the brutality of his knife attack.
- More openness is pushed to the surface by the situation. Joel discovers that Ellie is not the wide-eyed innocent he believed in, leading him to lament the burden he feels Ellie must carry for shooting someone for the first time.
- In reality, she has harmed someone in the past. He has to be honest with himself and admit that he clearly needs her more than he intended, especially given her willingness to shoot.
The Last of Us: Storyline
Unfortunately for both of them, who is this Brian? It was certainly a very good sign that his mother was Kathleen when he offered to take her to live with her before she died. (Her muted reaction when she saw his lifeless body more or less supports this.) There’s no way she won’t mind later.
By the end of the episode, as they climb 33 flights of stairs in a skyscraper in search of a safe place to sleep, Joel and Ellie are growing more confident in their ability to defend each other.
Of course, in the middle of the night, they wake up two new gun-wielding characters, one of whom appears to be in his twenties and the other just a boy. Since the younger one is wearing a painted superhero mask, it’s most likely Henry and Sam.
That kind of existential danger was also present when Joel and Ellie just drove along largely empty streets and cracked jokes. Even so, they could not rest without constantly fearing that something or someone nearby was waiting to complete their journey.
Ellie plays a pivotal role in this drama due to the multi-faceted performance of Bella Ramsey. She’s not afraid; Rather, she appreciates the life she has left.
She has a surprising amount of pre-apocalyptic knowledge, enough to joke about the gay porn magazine she discovers in Bill’s van.
However, she also romanticizes the past too much. Ellie enthusiastically asks, “Where did you go?” after Joel mentions that in the past, gas supplies never ran out and people could drive more than an hour on a full tank. “Pretty much nowhere,” was the reply.
At one point, Joel explains that he continues to live “for the family” despite not believing this fallen planet can ever rise again, while also adamantly telling Ellie that she is simply “cargo.”
It’s hard not to find Ellie lovable, but it’s obvious that his attitude is changing. Working with her has become more than just a duty.
Of course people like Kathleen have their own families. There’s a good chance things will get trickier.
