Leland Tyler Wayne was born on September 16, 1993 in St. Louis, Missouri. There he attended Parkway North High School. He is one of four children. After briefly playing bass guitar in his middle school band, he began making beats when he was 13 and in seventh grade. This was after his mother bought him a laptop and gave him a copy of FruityLoops software for making music. Wayne was doing five beats a day when he was in high school. Wayne wanted to rap first so he started making beats to have music to rap on. But in the end he devoted his full attention to hip-hop music. While still working on his production skills in high school, he began using social media sites like Twitter to connect with more experienced rap artists and submit beats for possible music internships.
During high school, Metro’s mom would often drive him from St. Louis to Atlanta, a drive that took more than eight hours, so he could work with artists he met online. One of the first people he worked with was Bricksquad Monopoly rapper Tay Don. This led him to collaborate with other artists on the Bricksquad label such as OJ Da Juiceman, Gucci Mane and then his frequent collaborator Future, with whom he still works.
Metro Boomin started going to Atlanta to try and start a music career when he was in 11th grade.
