Alexis Ohanian is an American investor and businessman. He is the son of Chris and Anke Ohanian.
Ohanian is an internet business owner from the United States. He founded the company Seven Seven Six. Prior to that, he was a co-founder and managing partner at Initialized Capital in the San Francisco Bay Area. People know him as the co-founder and CEO of the website Reddit.

Alexis Kerry Ohanian was born in the New York City of Brooklyn. After the Armenian Genocide, his paternal grandparents fled to the United States. Ohanian’s mother came from Germany. He attended Howard High School in Ellicott City, Maryland, where he gave the student address on graduation in 2001.
Career
Ohanian says he became very interested in technology when he got a 33.6k dial-up modem in middle school. He used message boards to learn how to code and put together websites. Eventually, he began creating free websites for nonprofit organizations by “tricking” them. He hid the fact that he was a teenager working in his parents’ basement behind his email.
Ohanian earned degrees in business administration and history from the University of Virginia in 2005. He and his friend Steve Huffman then went to Y Combinator with the idea for MyMobileMenu. The company didn’t like the idea, but they urged the two to come up with something else the company might be interested in. They later founded reddit.com with the idea that it would become “the front page of the internet”. ”
Ohanian did well in school at the University of Virginia. He was inducted into the National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS) and was a very dedicated member of his chapter.
Reddit was part of the Y-first Combinator startup group in the summer of 2005. In 2006, Condé Nast bought Reddit for an amount between $10 million and $20 million that was not made public. As a member of Reddit’s board of directors, Ohanian continued to work closely with the site. In July 2015, Ohanian and co-founder Huffman returned to Reddit full-time to run the company, which is now self-managed. In February 2018 he left the company to focus on investments again.
Ohanian founded Breadpig in 2007 as an “uncorporation” that makes geeky stuff and donates the money to charity. He no longer has anything to do with the day-to-day work of Breadpig.
Ohanian spoke to TED in 2009 about a whale named Mister Splashy Pants. Ohanian worked as a Kiva grantee in Yerevan, Armenia for three months after leaving Reddit in 2010. Ohanian helped launch travel search site Hipmunk in 2010, and he still works there as a consultant. Ohanian announced in June 2010 that his company, Das Kapital Capital, would begin investing, advising and advising for new businesses.
Early-stage venture firm Y Combinator awarded Ohanian the title of Ambassador of the East. This is the highest tier of women’s soccer in the United States. In 2022, the new team, whose name later became known as Angel City FC, started playing. The ownership group is primarily made up of women, including 14 former members of the US women’s national team, Oscar winner Natalie Portman and many other famous actors, entertainers, media figures and athletes, including Ohanian’s wife Serena Williams.

Invest in technology at the beginning
Ohanian co-founded Initialized Capital in 2010 and as a first step invested money in new companies such as Instacart, Zenefits, Opendoor and Cruise. It has managed three funds totaling more than $500 million. In 2014, CB Insights surveyed all tech investors and placed Ohanian at the forefront of network centrality. Ohanian invested $3 million in childcare start-up Kinside in 2019 through Initialized Capital. Ohanian also poured $4 million into David’s Disposable in 2020.
In April 2021, Ohanian pledged $10 million to social startup Pearpop in a Series A round. Other investors such as Bessemer Venture Partners, Sound Ventures, Slow Ventures and some famous people have also invested $6 million.
Internet activism is open
Ohanian spoke out against the Stop Online Piracy Act and the PROTECT IP Act in late 2010 and early 2011. He helped run the internet-based campaign that helped get the two bills repealed. Ohanian spoke to members of Congress, helped start the nationwide protests against SOPA/PIPA on January 18, 2012, and spoke at the New York rally organized by the NY Tech Meetup.
Ohanian and Erik Martin, the general manager of Reddit, launched the Internet 2012 Bus Tour from Denver, Colorado to Danville, Kentucky during the October 2012 presidential and vice presidential debates. One of the campaign stops led to the idea that Washington, DC, might have a “National Geek Day”.
Because of his work for an open internet, The Daily Dot placed Ohanian at the top of its list of the 10 most influential activists of 2012 and Forbes magazine called him the “Mayor of the Internet”.
Ohanian began trying to get the FCC to support net neutrality in May 2014. On January 15, 2015, he hosted an all-day phone contest with the FCC and Congress.
