Both of Sonika’s parents, Kuldip “Ken” Vaid and Ananya “Anna” Vaid, came to the United States at a young age. Once settled, they worked hard to make the American Dream a reality. Her father went to school to become an eye surgeon, which he still does today. Her mother went to engineering school and now works as a real estate developer.

“It’s funny because people say things like, ‘Oh my god, do your parents have an Indian accent?’ and I’m going to say, ‘No, they moved here when they were five years old,'” Vaid said.

Vaid was the eldest of six children and his mother knew he had a talent. She became Vaid’s personal vocal coach and helped her overcome her shyness.

“It’s so great to see how hard my dad is working to help people see again. That’s a big deal. To feel even a little bit of it when you make someone feel better or heal them is amazing.”

Vaid attended Meadowbrook School of Weston, a private school with small classes. While there, her mother would urge her to take risks that would force her into the spotlight, which Vaid was reluctant to do.

“In sixth grade, she took the initiative to talk to the music program and ask if there were any opportunities to sing or perform on stage, and she signed me up,” Vaid said.

“I just want to help other people,” she says. “It’s so great to see how hard my dad is working to help people see again. That’s a big deal. To feel even a little bit of it when you help someone feel better or heal them is amazing. I would feel so lucky to be a part of something like that.”
