Judges Harry Connick Jr., Jennifer Lopez and Keith Urban were all blown away by her voice when she sang for them for the first time.
“This is one of the few times this season that I’ve seen someone with a voice like that that I really think could win this thing. “That’s a voice straight from God,” Connick said after Vaid’s audition.
Vaid knows about music. Her grandfather was the first person in her family to show her how talented she was. A self-taught singer, he bought a harmonium shaped like an accordion and taught Ananya, Vaid’s mother, how to sing and play it.
“Basically I owe him everything I know about music because without him I would never have learned to sing. My mother would never have sung. “He gave it to my mother and she gave it to me,” Vaid said.
Both of Sonika’s parents, Kuldip “Ken” Vaid and Ananya “Anna” Vaid, came to the United States at a young age. Once settled, they worked hard to make the American Dream a reality. Her father went to school to become an eye surgeon, which he still does today. Her mother went to engineering school and now works as a real estate developer.
“It’s funny because people say things like, ‘Oh my god, do your parents have an Indian accent?’ and I’m going to say, ‘No, they moved here when they were five years old,'” Vaid said.
Vaid was the eldest of six children and his mother knew he had a talent. She became Vaid’s personal vocal coach and helped her overcome her shyness.
“It’s so great to see how hard my dad is working to help people see again. That’s a big deal. To feel even a little bit of it when you make someone feel better or heal them is amazing.”
Vaid attended Meadowbrook School of Weston, a private school with small classes. While there, her mother would urge her to take risks that would force her into the spotlight, which Vaid was reluctant to do.
“In sixth grade, she took the initiative to talk to the music program and ask if there were any opportunities to sing or perform on stage, and she signed me up,” Vaid said.
After a plane overturns at a Florida airport in bad weather, one person dies and one is injured.
They worked together on Celine Dion’s My Heart Will Go On for over a month. Vaid said that she felt ill the day of the performance, so her mother came to her on stage instead of letting her go home.
“It was definitely a turning point in my career. Since then, I’ve signed up for shows, sung and played piano at the same time, and just felt more comfortable on stage,” Vaid said. “I’m so happy knowing your mom always wants what’s best for you.”
Vaid has fans around the world after her first audition on “American Idol” made people like her.
Vaid said, “I get a lot of love from India.” “I’ve never been there, but it’s great. South Africa, Europe, Brazil and the Philippines all send love to me. It’s so amazing.”
But Vaid is still focused on her education even though she’s done well. She wants to complete her pre-med degree at the College of Holy Cross in Massachusetts but still study music. She wants to move there in the fall.
She said: “I took some time off to do music and I think music will still be a big part of my life even if I don’t win.”
But helping people heal like her dad is doing is something she just can’t give up.
“I just want to help other people,” she says. “It’s so great to see how hard my dad is working to help people see again. That’s a big deal. To feel even a little bit of it when you help someone feel better or heal them is amazing. I would feel so lucky to be a part of something like that.”
