After the F-22 Raptor shot down a Chinese “spy” balloon, “Top Gun 3” has been all the rage on the internet. At least we have a plot
“At least we have a plot”: Trends after F-22 in “Top Gun 3”. The Chinese “spy” balloon was destroyed by the Raptor.
Fans stuck by Top Gun: Maverick and started speculating about Top Gun 3 after the United States shot down a suspected Chinese spy balloon (Paramount).
Filmed in Los Angeles, California, Top Gun: Maverick was one of the highest-grossing movies of 2022. Fans couldn’t stop raving about the Tom Cruise movie, but many have begun to wonder about the possibility of a third to speculate part of the Top Gun franchise.
However, after the “Balloon” event, it seems that in real life, adoring fans have already created a situation reminiscent of “Top Gun”.
Tom Cruise stars in the film as Pete Maverick, a Navy aviator who returns after 30 years of service to help prepare a group of elite graduate students for a high-profile mission while battling his own personal demons.
The film was produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and Tom Cruise plays the role in the film. The original Top Gun was successful at the box office, but the sequel Top Gun: Maverick broke box office records and became one of the highest-grossing films of the year.

Top Gun 3: Spy Balloon
Not long after, someone wrote: “That woke me up this morning!! Another user commented, “At least we have a storyline for Top Gun 3,” while a third said, “World War 3 or Top Gun 3 going on…I don’t know…#fighterjet.”
A fan wanted to know when the story will be filmed. Another participant remarked, “Wait a minute.
This whole balloon ordeal was just for the third part of the TOPGUN series, right?” Another user joined the conversation: “The story in #Topgun3 is going CRAZY! The air is full of smoke. Don’t think about it; Just say “POP” and count to one, Mav.”
Top Gun: Global Conflict
The movie Top Gun: Maverick was a success, but it came perilously close to sparking a global conflict. Screenrant claims that during the filming of Darkstar’s opening sequence, satellites from other nations focused on the China Lake Naval Air Station and took photos of the hypersonic scramjet used in the film.
Not only that, the first trailer for the film, released in 2019, featured a character sporting a Taiwanese flag on her signature bomber jacket.
During the sneak peek, the patches on Cruise’s jacket that previously featured flags of Taiwan and Japan appeared to have been removed and replaced with two cryptic symbols in the same color scheme. The patches had previously featured flags of Taiwan and Japan.
Although Top Gun: Maverick will be the highest-grossing film of 2022, Paramount has not yet announced that Top Gun 3 will be made.
Miles Teller admitted in July 2022 that he has spoken to Tom Cruise about the possibility of directing a third film in the series.
On the other hand, in December 2022, producer Jerry Bruckheimer expressed concern that Cruise might be too busy for a third part at the moment.
“His attention is currently focused on the production of Mission: Impossible 8, which is already underway. After he’s done, we can talk. But then [for an untitled project from Universal] He goes into space and then does something else,” he explained in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
As with the sequel, it will likely depend on whether they can develop a plot interesting enough to warrant a return.
However, director Joseph Kosinski stated in an interview with Deadline in December 2022 that there is potential for another sequel. “
By the end of this film, I have the impression that Maverick still has some steam left in the tank. He’s not content with settling down,” he joked.
Here’s everything you need to know about Top Gun 3 while we wait for confirmation that it’s made (hopefully sooner rather than later).

Top Gun 3 Release Date
As just hinted at, Top Gun 3 hasn’t been officially approved for production, which means we don’t have a concrete release date yet.
Let’s just hope it doesn’t go another 36 years, and not just because Tom Cruise will be 89 by then (although probably still doing stunts).
However, Bruckheimer has hinted that it’s possible he doesn’t have time to direct another Top Gun film right now.
Even if it were to be confirmed in the near future, it’s unlikely we’d see the sequel in 2023 as it took about a year to film.
Even considering the summer of 2024 as the earliest possible release date for the third part of the trilogy, it’s possible that even this prediction is overly optimistic.
Maverick is now available to view on Paramount+.
Keep an eye on this area as we will make updates as we receive new information.
Top Gun 3: Cast
Tom Cruise will, of course, return as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell; However, it’s possible he’ll have a supporting role in the sequel, with Miles Teller’s character Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw occupying a more prominent position.
Because Val Kilmer’s Iceman character was eliminated in a plot twist that didn’t involve a fiery plane crash, the actor will not be returning to the role.
That said, there’s still a chance that Val Kilmer or another member of the original Top Gun cast will make a cameo appearance in the Top Gun: Maverick prequel in the form of a flashback. This is because the prequel made limited (and, dare we say, tasteful) use of material from the original film.
Now that Maverick and Penny have rekindled their romance, there’s nothing stopping Jennifer Connelly from returning to the role of Penny (especially with a third film focusing on Maverick’s adjustment to civilian life and stepfatherhood).
Aside from them, we could also expect to see more of the group of Top Gun elite that will feature in the sequel. These characters include Lewis Pullman as Robert “Bob” Floyd, Monica Barbaro as Natasha “Phoenix” Trace, and Glen Powell as Jake “Hangman” Seresin.
Top Gun 3: Storyline
- Similar to its predecessor, Top Gun: Maverick sets no explicit additional film ambitions; However, that doesn’t mean there’s no drama to be found in the film.
- In short, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell made his way back to Top Gun to help prepare a group of pilots for an extraordinarily challenging mission to blow up a uranium facility in a virtually inaccessible location to hunt .
- Of course, after much deliberation, it is decided that Maverick will command the pilots, and his team includes none other than Rooster Bradshaw, son of his closest friend Goose, who has passed away.
- This decision was made after much back and forth. The strained connection between Rooster and Maverick is the main source of conflict throughout the film; nevertheless, there is no need to worry, because everything will work out in the end!
- Not only are the Top Gun pilots able to complete the mission without any glitches, no one is killed in the process. Additionally, the love interest of Pete’s character, Penny (played by Jennifer Connelly), returns into his life and the two ride off into the sunset together.
- As a result, there’s no definitive answer as to how a third film could bring us back with Pete to Top Gun. It is extremely unlikely that the Top Gun 2 storyline will be repeated (where he has to direct a new group of pilots and recruits).
- It wasn’t made clear if the mission in Top Gun: Maverick would actually be Pete’s last, but that was the general mood – after all, he was once grounded by his superior “Cyclone” (Jon Hamm) before pulling a stunt that left him back in the cockpit (oh, Mav!).
- It was not confirmed in Top Gun: Maverick whether or not the mission would actually be Pete’s last, but that was the general mood.
- On the other hand, a third film could explore what retirement might mean for Maverick and how he might fare in civilian life if he were to leave the military (before being brought back on board, of course).
Top Gun 3: Trailer
Unfortunately, Top Gun 3 hasn’t even been announced, let alone started filming, so no footage of the threequel is currently available.
Just watch Top Gun: Maverick over and over again on Paramount+ until production of the third film gets closer.
