Based on the 936-page tome by Gregory David Roberts, Shantaram is only moderately engaging once you get past the film’s bizarre accents, misplaced takes, shaky plot, and white savior clichés (which is asking a lot), but it is nonetheless worth seeing. Shantaram is a film set in 1980s Bombay and tells the story of Dale, a heroin addict and bank robber, played by Charlie Hunnam. Dale escapes from Pentridge Prison in Victoria, Australia to Bombay, where he is brutally tortured and beaten.

Characters played by Charlie Hunnam, Fayssal Bazzi, Sujaya Dasgupta, Antonia Desplat, Elham Ehsas, David Field, Matthew Joseph, Rachel Kamath, Alyy Khan, Elektra Kilbey, Shiv Palekar, Luke Pasqualino, Vincent Perez, Shubham Saraf, Gabrielle Scharnitzky and Alexander Siddig can be seen in the film.
The plot follows an escaped convict who travels to India hoping to start anew and find love, among other things.
What was intended as a brief stopover turns out to be an extended stay, during which Dale discovers the identities of Lin-baba, Dr. Lin and eventually Shantaram accepts. Lindsey Ford’s name appears on the fake passport Dale uses. Like any other big and bustling city, Bombay Lin gives access to a multitude of shady ladies and black knights.
Lin encounters the prototypical impostor in the form of Prabhu, the tour guide, as soon as she steps out of the van (Shubham Saraf). At the time of the events described in the novel, Reyanaldo’s Café played the role of the legendary Leopold Café. There are the femme fatale Karla (Antonia Desplat), with whom Lin quickly falls in love, her partner Didier (Vincent Perez), the beautiful American junkie and lady of the night Lisa (Elektra Kilbey), her pimps Modena (Elham Ehsas) and Maurizio ( Luke Pasqualino), a stuntman named Vikram (Shiv Palekar) who has a thing for spaghetti westerns.
Rap callions from all over the world are part of the underworld, including Abdel Khader Khan (played by Alexander Siddig), his bitter rival Walid Shah (Mel Odedra) and his servant Abdullah Taheri (Fayssal Bazzi). There’s the villainous Madame Zhou, played by Gabrielle Scharnitzky, who is in charge of the Palace, a sprawling brothel with a high-end clientele.
Ravi (Matthew Joseph), a boy whose mother dies in a fire for which Lin blames herself, the respected and respectful headmaster Qasim Ali (Alyy Khan) and Parvati (Rachel Kamath), who works at a tea stall and Prabhu’s love interest is one of the show’s sweeter subplots is some of the good people who live in the slum.
Accents are quirky, from Charlie Hunnam’s sporadic use of an Australian accent to one of the Mumbaikars’ inability to properly pronounce the name of their slum, Sagar Wada. Oh how we’ve been waiting for Vijay Dinanath Chouhan’s Mandwa!
Shantaram Season 1 Episode 9: The Ending Explained
The third episode of “Shantaram” begins with flames of fire engulfing the slum and the people living there. Due to the rapid spread, Laxmi, a resident of the slum, was involved in an accident and was seriously injured. Lin, who already had experience in emergency medical services, immediately began providing the best medical care to the injured residents of the slum. Lin received credit from Qasim, believed to be the boss of the slum, for helping the slum’s injured. However, Laxmi could not be saved due to the lack of a hospital, necessary medicines, equipment and a qualified medical professional. As a result, Lin was forced to blame himself for his wife’s death.
During this time, Khader Khan faced his most formidable adversary, Walid Shah. It looked like Walid Shah was a more powerful figure in the criminal underground than Khan. Their conversation gave the impression that they were fighting over ownership of a place called Sagar Wada. Khader also contacted brothel owner Zhou, who assisted Ruzul in his arrangement with Walid Shah at the brothel she owned and known as the “Palace”. Zhou appeared loyal to Khader, but maintained her identity. She looked Khader straight in the eye and spoke with confidence.
Khader refrained from killing her, knowing there was another possible use for her. During this time, Lin maintained his practice of providing medical care to the residents of the slum. Lin reluctantly accepted Prabhu’s offer to work as a doctor for the people living in the slum, forcing Lin to accept the offer. The reason Lin was arrested was revealed to us in the flashback. He was involved in a fight with a police officer while he and Charlie were fleeing a bank robbery scene. During the fight, Lin’s gun accidentally went off, eventually resulting in the officer’s death. Lin could not leave the dying man in his current condition, which led to his arrest by the authorities.

Charlie Hunnam was cast to play Lin Ford on Shantaram.
Charlie Hunnam portrays the role of prison escapee Lin Ford trying to remain anonymous in 1980s Bombay. Hunnam is the protagonist of the film.
Hunnam, 42, adds that the book is “a brilliantly written work that exposed me to a world I had never seen before”. “It’s this epic, expansive, and incredibly beautiful love story, but it’s also a tale of great adventure and finding out more about yourself at the same time. Lin finds himself on this quest for spiritual awakening in India while also being drawn deeper into the realms of organized crime.”
“The book was a gift from a friend and it just so happened that I left for Thailand the next day. I decided to bring it with me, which turned out to be fantastic for me, but not so fantastic for my partner as the book is 936 pages. After tearing it through, I turned and asked my close friend, a writer and producer, “Can we do this?”
However, Charlie Hunnam’s breakthrough on British television came in 1999 when he appeared as a teenager in Channel 4’s original series Queer As Folk as the lovestruck Nathan Maloney. Although best known for his role as Jackson “Jax” Teller on American biker drama Sons of Anarchy, Hunnam’s breakthrough came on British television. The Newcastle-born actor, now 42, previously starred in BBC youth drama Byker Grove.

Shantaram Season 1 Release Date
On Friday, October 14, 2022, the first three episodes of the drama series Shantaram will air worldwide on Apple TV+. The series will have a total of 12 episodes. A new episode will be released every week thereafter, beginning on Fridays through December 16, 2022.
