Tell Me Lies Season 1 Episode 4 is about Bree, played by Catherine Missal. She prepares to go to a party with Pippa. Stephen doesn’t want to go, so Lucy doesn’t go. And the next day he has an internship interview at a well-known law firm.
Bree meets Tim at the party. He doesn’t know she’s a virgin, but they don’t stay together long anyway. In fact, he walks a little too fast to be normal. The next morning, Bree isn’t sure how she feels going back to her dorm room. Although her first sexual experience was disappointing, she’s excited to post a nude pic for her art class.
Lucy stayed in Stephan’s room, and after the interview he invites her to hang out in town. Lucy finds condoms in his drawer, revealing that he sleeps with other women.
At the beginning of the episode, Pippa casually mentioned that Lucy was on birth control pills so he wouldn’t have to wear a condom. Stephan had already told Lucy in episode 2 that they don’t have a label for their relationship because it’s open.
Evan comes in and gets ready to go to drawing class. Stephan lies about where in town he will sleep that night. He says he’ll stay with Evan’s parents, but actually he’s staying with Diana.
At breakfast, Bree tells her friends about her not-so-special night, but she makes it sound like the best night ever. She doesn’t know what to make of it yet, and that seems like the right thing to do. Sitting with the three girls, Wrigley accidentally lets slip that Stephan is still with Diana. He also says that she is more ambitious than Lucy. She doesn’t like how this hint makes her feel.
In the next scene, she talks to her English teacher about her grades and the advanced course of the next semester. She got B+s for all her assignments and her teacher says she needs to do more. Lucy pretends to be upset about Macy’s death and the professor is kind to her. She makes sure she will find a way to help Lucy.
Bree goes to her art class, where she is surprised to see Evan. Even if he’s not looking at her for sexual pleasure, it could be a sign that he likes her. It can’t be a coincidence, can it? Normally, television irony doesn’t allow that. Stephan makes it to Diana’s parents, which is pretty cool.
He is looking at a painting in his father’s office. Diana tells him not to do it, but he does it anyway. It’s a small thing, but it shows a lot about Stephan. He always goes against what he should and does the opposite of what he should. That night Bree watches porn to see if she will have an orgasm. Since high school, Pippa has been open about having her, which has confused her two best friends. At that moment, Tim sends her a message and asks her to come over.
Here, the same thing happens again as on the first night, which makes Bree doubt himself even more. Tim might not be the best person for her after all. Bree and Lucy talk about how she and Stephan have an electrical connection. When she first met him, she knew right away that he was the one for her. He made her feel things in her body that she had never felt before.
Bree is really thinking about what you said, which is a good sign to start with. Stephan is nervously waiting in the lobby for the interview. Instead of a man, a pretty colleague goes to his job interview. Drew walks up to Bree in the library and says he’s sorry because he’s better now.
Bree is still mad at him for leaving her and Tim, so she ignores his request and even insults him by telling him she won’t sleep with him just because he’s sorry. The interview goes well at first, but Stephan’s natural charm begins to work against him.
He goes too far with his colleague. To impress her, he even lies about having been to Europe. He messes up the interview, which hurts his chances of getting an internship. Getting the internship would have been a big step toward his goal of becoming a lawyer. If Diana throws a party, the three girls all go.
When Diana walks in, they’re hanging out in a room with Wrigley. Bree tells Lucy to go if she sees them, but Pippa doesn’t go with them. Instead, she stays in the room. The other people at the party think that’s a bit rude, but when Bree sees Tim at the party, she tells him that he didn’t even say hello to her. He says she’s putting too much pressure on him by not telling him she’s a virgin. Bree is shocked by what he says and ends the relationship. She just broke up with her boyfriend and she’s not sure if she looks good enough for boys.
She goes to Drew’s dorm and kisses him out of confusion, but Drew calms her down afterwards. He doesn’t say anything about what happened to Macy, but it seems he and Macy are getting along now. Stephan calls Lucy into town, and she doesn’t know they’re making out at Diana’s. She looks back into her shaving kit and sees the condoms. She confronts him about not going to parties with her.
Stephan hits back and turns it to her insidiously. She thinks she did something wrong and says she’s sorry. What a nice guy he is! He can get almost anyone to do whatever they want. He probably doesn’t like people who know a lot about the law. Bree and Evan share a touching moment together. She reads aloud the postcard her foster sister sent her.
Evan tells Allie that he and Allie are no longer together. For us, it all started when Bree posed nude in an art class. They keep the conversation going and seem a good match. The three friends meet in Pippa’s room and talk about what went wrong.
Pippa and Bree try to get Lucy to date other people, which is good for Stephan. She goes to Max and the two go out on a date. While awake in her dorm bed, she suddenly feels the urge to go to Stephan’s room and spend the night there. When she goes to the toilet in the morning, she sees the condom packs in the trash. She goes back to bed with Stephan, but it’s not clear what’s going on in her head.
This episode is a perfect example of what the show is about: mystery. Even the characters don’t know how to feel or what to do next. However, the confusing and vague tone doesn’t add any charm to the story.
It might make us want to come back to see what happens next, but after watching the episode I felt like I didn’t know enough about what was going on. Lucy has been behaving in ways that are not clear and their relationship is only getting worse. Also, Stephan doesn’t seem like a very good or bad person. He’s not entirely to blame for how Lucy feels, which is different than it seemed in the first three episodes.
Catherine Missal has always been my favorite of the three, so it was nice to see this episode focus on her. The scene with her and Evan was probably the first time this show felt normal and real like we’re used to.
In Tell Me Lies you can choose from a variety of characters that you don’t like. While it’s not a bad thing, people tend to watch it without getting too involved. That’s what I thought when I saw episode 4.
And how often do these people party? Is it common for American universities to have them so often? It was almost three in Episode 4, but it’s been at least ten so far this season. We’re not even halfway there yet! There seems to be a lot going on there, so they’ve unintentionally become a kind of motif. And without making any sense at all!
Tell Me Lies is hard to decide what to think about. You like it and hate it at the same time. It is quite possible that the love-hate relationship lasts for the rest of the season.
