Movie Judgment
Due to the tremendous success of the first The Godfather film, various adaptations of the story have been made in a variety of languages. It’s not something that’s never been done before, especially in movies about the mafia; The Life of Muthu: A Journey of Muthu does not invent this form of narrative framework. However, what has made many of these films box office hits and unforgettable is their great character designs, and this film undoubtedly features a cast of people who are woven into the story from the start. Nevertheless, the film is entertaining, although it follows a well-established narrative structure due to the main character.
The character of Muthu, a notorious criminal, is intriguingly portrayed in the first few minutes of the film. The narrative continues as it follows Muthu through his childhood years, which are slow at first but quick after he reaches Mumbai. The novel is set in India. The love story is the film’s most egregious flaw; it adds nothing to the plot and exists only to perhaps attract fans of Gautham Vasudevan Menon. In the film we see him starting out as a young man in Mumbai struggling to make ends meet and then growing into an adult committing horrific acts.
The film’s overall Tamil flavor should help it do well at the box office, but it might not resonate with Telugu audiences due to a lack of intense emotion and incoherent dubbing, particularly in the voice-over script.
