At approximately 8:30 a.m. on November 28, 2020, the Asheville Police Department received a 911 call regarding a shooting incident in North Asheville. On December 8, 2020, the Atlanta Police Department announced that they had taken the 16-year-old murder suspect into custody in response to increasing pressure from Tey’s community and nationwide media coverage of the tragedy.
The investigation was conducted in cooperation with the Juvenile Justice Division of the North Carolina Department of Public Safety, and its goal was to apprehend the alleged killer. The spokesman had also warned that Dionate was classified as dangerous and was probably armed. As the suspect is still at large, police were unable to provide any further details on the investigation into the attack. Diontae is the subject of a missing persons report by the police.
