When Heche’s older sister Cynthia died of a heart condition at the age of two months, the traumatizing sequence in her life began. And things in life only got worse from there. Her family, full of secrets, kept moving to other places while her father struggled to support her. Born in Ohio, Heche first moved to New Jersey with her family before settling in Chicago during her teens.

The actress claims Donald has never come out as gay. He died of the disease at the age of 45. Later that year, her brother died in a car accident that Anne believed was suicide.
In her 2001 memoir Call Me Crazy, Heche discussed her trauma, saying that her sexually abusive father was a secret homosexual who abused her and also gave her genital herpes. She wrote: “He petted me, he put me on all fours and we had sex. He raped me.”
“My father may have had a sex addiction. I think he perceived everyone as a sexual being. But I think he was living a very flamboyant homosexual lifestyle at the time,” she revealed in a 2001 interview with Larry King. “You know, back then there were bathhouses that were all about seeing how many you could complete in a single night. There’s no mistaking what he was doing at the moment,” she continued.
Heche explained during a guest appearance on Hollywood Medium that her mother had moved the family from New Jersey to Chicago due to the death of her father and brother Nathan. Susan Bergman, Anne’s sister, wrote a 1994 memoir entitled “Anonymity” in which she spoke about her difficult upbringing and her father’s homosexuality. According to the well-known author, who taught at New York University, Northwestern University and the University of Notre Dame, her family learned of her father’s homosexuality the same year he died.
Heche said in her book that she was in a relationship with a man considerably older than when she was in her 20s, including comedians Steve Martin and Lindsay Buckingham. Heche discussed her feelings in her book when Martin asked, “Why couldn’t my father have been more like him?”
