Susan Bergman, Anne’s sister, wrote a 1994 memoir entitled “Anonymity” in which she spoke about her difficult upbringing and her father’s homosexuality. According to the well-known author, who taught at New York University, Northwestern University and the University of Notre Dame, her family learned of her father’s homosexuality the same year he died.

Heche said in her book that she was in a relationship with a man considerably older than when she was in her 20s, including comedians Steve Martin and Lindsay Buckingham. Heche discussed her feelings in her book when Martin asked, “Why couldn’t my father have been more like him?”
