Early years and historical context
Yami Gautam grew up in Chandigarh after being born into a Brahmin Hindu family in Bilaspur in the state of Himachal Pradesh. Her father, Mukesh Gautam, is a well-known director in the Punjabi cinema industry. He serves as Vice President of PTC Network. Anjali Gautam is her mother’s name. Her younger sister Surilie Gautam, who made her big screen debut in the Punjabi film Power Cut, is also an actress. She completed her primary and secondary education and then earned a master’s degree with honors in law. She had a childhood dream of becoming a member of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), but when she was 20 years old, she decided to pursue an acting career instead. Despite being a first-year law student at a private university with honors, she chose to pursue acting rather than pursue her education full-time. Career
A career in television (2008–2010)
Choosing a career in the film industry, Gautam moved to Mumbai, India at the age of 20. Her first appearance on television was on the show Chand Ke Paar Chalo. She continued her role as the protagonist in Raajkumar Aaryyan. She then appeared on the television show Yeh Pyar Na Hoga Kam for Colors, which is widely considered to be her most significant television role to date. In addition, she was a contestant on the reality shows Meethi Choori No. 1 and Kitchen Champion Season 1.
First feature film and early works (2009–2018)
Gautam debuted in a leading role in the 2009 Kannada film Ullasa Utsaha. She then made her debut in a leading role in the romantic comedy Vicky Donor directed by Shoojit Sircar (2012). She played the role of Ashima Roy, a Bengali woman who falls in love with the title character, a Punjabi boy from the Arora family, and finds out about his past after they marry. She starred in the film alongside Ayushmann Khurrana, who was then making his acting debut, Annu Kapoor and Dolly Ahluwalia. In 2014, Gautam made her comeback in the Bollywood film industry after a two-year absence. Gautam appeared in the action thriller directed by Sriram Raghavan and starring Varun Dhawan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui in 2015. The film, centered around the story of a man (Raghu, played by Dhawan) who, over the course of 15 years, avenges the murder of his wife (Misha, played by her) and son, proved to be a critical and commercial success grossed 770 million (US$11 million) worldwide, with Gautam’s performance being praised for its quality.
In the 2016 films Sanam Re and Junooniyat, directed by Divya Khosla Kumar and Vivek Agnihotri respectively, Gautam Pulkit portrayed Samrat’s romantic interest in both films. In the first she represented a high school student who develops feelings for Samrat’s character, while in the second she played a Punjabi girl who develops feelings for an army officer. Both characters eventually fall in love with each other. Sanam Re and Junooniyat were both a critical and monetary disappointment to their respective editors.
The next year, Gautam worked alongside Hrithik Roshan on Sanjay Gupta’s vengeful romance thriller Kaabil (2017). The film follows the story of a blind man seeking revenge for raping his blind wife. Breakthrough and Success (since 2019)
The role that garnered Gautam the most recognition was the role she played in 2019’s Uri: The Surgical Strike, which was directed by Aditya Dhar and played Vicky Kaushal, Paresh Rawal, Mohit Raina and Kirti Kulhari alongside other well-known actors. In light of the 2016 Uri attack, Gautam Pallavi portrayed Sharma, a nurse who later became an intelligence officer. The film received critical acclaim upon its initial release, with Gautam paying special attention to his performance. The film grossed over 3.42 billion (about US$44 million) internationally, ranking it as the third highest-grossing Hindi film of the year. She next appeared alongside Khurrana in the comedy-drama directed by Amar Kaushik entitled Bala. The film is a satire on the concept of physical attractiveness and was released on November 7, 2019. Gautam was widely acclaimed for her performance as Pari Mishra, a small Tik Toker and part-time model from Lucknow. She plays a woman who feels betrayed and leaves him after finding out her husband is bald. The film also stars Bhumi Pednekar. The film premiered to excellent reviews. Sukanya Verma, a film critic, described Gautam’s performance in the film as “part insane, part infatuated”. She also said that “her obsessive, frank artificiality has a gentle, off-kilter air that makes her both mesmerizing and heartbreaking.” Verma included Gautam in the 2019 list of Best Bollywood Actresses published by Rediff . The global gross for Bala was 1.7 billion yen, which is nearly $22 million in American currency.
In the 2020 film Ginny Weds Sunny, she played the role of Ginny alongside Vikrant Massey. The film was directed by Puneet Khanna, who was making his directorial debut, and produced by Vinod Bachchan. As a result of the COVID-19 epidemic, the film did not have a traditional theatrical release and was instead made available on Netflix on October 9, 2020.
