What does “fatwa” mean in the Islamic religion? Many claim it is related to the recent stabbing of Salman Rushdie at the Chautauqua Institute.
Satanic Verses author Salman Rushdie was assaulted while performing on the stage at the Chautauqua Institution in New York. The attacker stormed the platform as someone else introduced the author before his speech.
He was attacked and stabbed in the neck by an unknown assailant. After the attack, the author collapsed to the ground as the attacker was handcuffed. He had already faced threats with his life, most notably an Iranian fatwa, for writing The Satanic Verses 33 years earlier.
What does a Muslim fatwa mean? Who can accept a fatwa?
According to Reza Aslan, a fatwa is a declaration of a law.
It is the point of view of a mufti, a scholar of Islamic law, who is qualified to express his opinion on all matters of Islamic law.
In general, a mufti can be identified by their position in the educational system. He is chosen by a group of academics who trust his impartiality. The level of knowledge and whether it is enough to be a mufti also play a role.
A mufti must therefore be knowledgeable on a wide range of subjects, particularly Islamic cultures, in order to properly pronounce the punishment. A Mufti’s decision is not binding and the procedure is called ifta.
Fatwa has an important place in Islam, especially in the development of faith. However, the expression has changed somewhat in modern times and is now used to refer to those who denigrate Islam.

Is the fatwa to blame for Salman Rushdie’s stabbing at the Chautauqua Institution?
Author Salman Rushdie was attacked during a speech at the Chautauqua Institute in New York.
The attack occurred 33 years after Iran issued a fatwa against him. In 1989, after the publication of The Satanic Verses, the Ayatollah of Iran issued a fatwa against him.
Many people believe that Iran could be responsible for the stabbing. It comes after Masih Alinejad was threatened in Brooklyn and someone who Iran paid $300,000 to kill John Bolton was arrested.
It is therefore clear that many people do not consider it a coincidence. But so far, no one has admitted blame for the attack. In 1998, the Iranian government declared that it would not implement the fatwa. Therefore, we are not sure of their connection to the stabbing.
