Personal Quotes
It’s about learning to walk and talk. I would hate to be in the middle of a big movie and not be able to do my job. There are young actors who are put in the lead roles and are supposed to lead armies, but they can’t quite do it. I’d rather take it slow and build on what I’ve already done. But at least now, when they’re looking for actors for American films, the number one question for me is, “Can he speak an American accent?” Now we know the answer. He can make one, or he can make a 1930’s New Yorker.
All actors are different, and we all have different things that drive us.
[on Tyrannosaur (2011)] Different people wear different masks. To deal with the world, they put on a different face. It’s a weird way of fooling people. They are out there but nobody pays attention to them because nobody pays attention to the things that caused them.
We have to admit that the pain and suffering are real. It is everywhere. One night you might be watching the evening news and hearing about a woman who was beaten to death. They might end up showing a shot of a dog on a surfboard to cheer you up. That makes me bad.
I am anxious. I worry that we’re becoming less human. So I want to learn more about these people. There has to be a way out, a way to make things right. I have to think like that. When you have no hope, life just keeps getting worse.
(about Rocky, 1976) A story about an outsider is told cinematically. People are watching this movie now and they think he wins because his personal gain is so great. But you have to remember that Rocky lost the first “Rocky”. That’s why I like it so much. It’s a film about a loser who turns out to be good in the end.
[on why he stopped acting and started directing] I was just tired of the low budget UK movies where they would get a handheld camera and pan it around as they made things up over time. This whole method has been screwed up to death. I’m tired of seeing it. I had the idea of making a film.
I spoke to kids who had just graduated from drama school and they said they hadn’t learned anything. Then I looked at them and said, “No, I don’t believe you. I think you learned something.” It’s pretty cool to say, “I went to college and didn’t learn anything,” but they had some experiences that I didn’t.
It’s an ability. We make fun of actors, but acting is an art
I just started working with an acting coach named Martin Ledwith. We started by breaking it down and looking at why I thought some parts of my performances weren’t working. Then we looked at other great performances from other actors and started building it from there.
Musical career
After a stint in Grunt, a college virtual comedy-thrash band, Considine and Shane Meadows formed She Talks to Angels with friends Richard Eaton, Simon Hudson and Nick Hemming (later The Leisure Society). Meadows was the lead singer and Considine was the drummer. After Considine left the band, the other members reunited and formed a new group called Oslo. Considine had studied photography at the University of Brighton where he formed a new band called Pedestrians. They acted in the Jools Holland show. He’s now in a rock band called Riding the Low. Her EP They Will Rob You of Your Gifts was released in 2009 and her album What Happened to the Get to Know Ya? was released in 2011 (2013).
Tim Burgess of the Charlatans gave Considine and Riding the Low their big musical break in 2014. He asked her to perform at his Tim Peaks Diner event at Festival No 6 in Portmeirion, Wales. After reading Burgess’ book Telling Stories, Considine contacted him to discuss meditation. “Tim then offered to let us play at Portmeirion, which led to the band opening for the Charlatans this year at the O2 Academy in Leicester. I didn’t have stage fright. We were all ready. We did our history work in secret. We have evolved. We’ve gotten better. It was hard at first and we only had pride. We had a long way to go and all those pub gigs helped us get better at what we did. We didn’t think having an actor in the band would give them an advantage,” Considine said
The band’s second full-length album Are Here to Help the Neighborhood was released in 2016. It was recorded at Rockfield Studios and produced by Boston Spaceships and Guided By Voices bassist Chris Slusarenko. The lyrics were written by Considine, and the music was written by the band.
