A mass shooting erupted Tuesday night in Washington Park in Chicago, according to authorities, killing one person and injuring at least six others.
A ShotSpotter alert was activated around 7:45 a.m., according to the Chicago Police Department. Although the investigation is still in its early stages, a witness said he heard more than 20 gunshots during the period in question.

Lionel Coward was hit in the back of the head by a bullet, police and the Cook County, Illinois coroner’s office said. Coward was 43 years old. Emergency responders discovered him in serious condition; he did not survive his injuries.
Another 20-year-old man was shot multiple times and was transferred to the University of Chicago Medical Center, but did not survive his time there.
A 30-year-old man was hit by a bullet in his left shin and his condition was assessed as good. A 39-year-old man was hit in the right ankle by a bullet and his condition was also assessed as good. A 47-year-old woman was struck in the left thigh by a bullet and her condition was also assessed as good. A 22-year-old man was hit in the left elbow by a bullet and his condition was also assessed as good. All were transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center in the same ambulance.
A woman in his 30s who suffered a scrape on her upper right arm and a man in his 40s who suffered a scrape on his right calf were the other two victims who subsequently presented to hospital. A man, age 19, presented to Insight Hospital with an injury to his right shoulder. According to the report, he was in a healthy condition.
