What does it mean that Darren Watkins Jr. is charged with swatting?
Darren Watkins Jr could face beating charges for recently attempting to trick an emergency medical service.
Swatting is the act of calling the police or fire department to report serious crimes under false pretenses.
It is related to the act of “doxing,” whereby an individual’s address and other personal information is collected and shared to harass or put them at risk, often over the Internet.
It carries a high risk of violence and could get the city or county in trouble if something goes wrong and they have to use taxpayer dollars to deal with a bogus claim of a major law enforcement emergency.
This is caused by things like a fake report of a major law enforcement emergency like a bomb threat, homicide, a fake mental health emergency, or a hostage situation.
Swatting criminals can use many different methods such as: B. changing the number in the caller ID, social engineering, TTY, prank calls and phone phreaking.
In many places, lying to rescue workers is a crime, and people who do so are often fined or jailed.
