Byrne, former CEO of Overstock.com, Cassidy Hutchinson texted Ornato, “The West Wing is out of control,” Ornato said her answer: “Oh holy hell”. In late December 2020, Trump’s associates spoke to Ornato about the president’s desire to ride in a motorcade on January 6 with protesters angry that Joe Biden had been elected president. Cassidy Hutchinson, a former White House staffer for Trump, told the House Select Committee about the Jan. 6 attack in June 2022 that she was told by Ornato that after his Ellipse rally on Jan. 6, Trump was in the presidential ranks -SUV got on and wanted to go there. When his supporters marched there, his senior Secret Service agent, Robert Engel, told him it was too dangerous and they were going back to the White House. Ornato told Hutchinson Trump got angry and tried to grab the car’s steering wheel and lunge at Engel’s collarbones. She said that Engel was with Ornato when he told the story, but Engel never disputed what Ornato said. CNN said three days after Hutchinson’s testimony that it had spoken to two Secret Service agents since February 2021, who had heard about the incident from many other agents, including Trump’s driver. Although the details varied, the agents all agreed that there had been a heat wave dispute. An agent said that Trump “tried to throw himself over the seat, but no one knew why,” but no one said Trump attacked angels. Another intelligence official told CNN that both Engel and Ornato denied having told Hutchinson that Trump grabbed the wheel or lunged at any of the agents in his command. Politico said the same day Engel told the committee during a testimony in early 2022 that he had kept the full story of what happened from his intelligence operatives for at least 14 months.

Hutchinson said in court that Ornato told White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows on the morning of Jan. 6 that people at Trump’s rally had guns. Ornato also told Hutchinson he told Trump about the guns. Keith Kellogg, Pence’s aide, reportedly told Ornato that Pence had a good reason not to let the Secret Service take him out of the Capitol while the riots were ongoing. But Politico’s Kyle Cheney said Ornato had told a committee Jan. 6 that Pence had already been evacuated when Trump tweeted at 2:24 p.m. attacking Pence. This is not true, said Ornato.
