emergence and development

Sheryl Leach from Dallas, Texas came up with the idea for Barney. She considered doing a children’s show after realizing her son was too old for Wee Sing Together and that there weren’t any videos that would interest him. Leach then assembled a team that directed Barney and the Backyard Gang, a series of home movies that debuted in 1988. Sandy Duncan starred in all three of the first videos.

In 1991, the daughter of Larry Rifkin, who worked for Connecticut Public Television, rented one of the videos and was “hypnotized” by it. Rifkin thought PBS could build on the idea. Rifkin found Barney interesting because he wasn’t as crazy as Big Bird. He told CPTV President Jerry Franklin about it, and his son, who was preschool at the time, was ecstatic too. Franklin and Rifkin pitched the idea to all of their colleagues with preschoolers, and everyone agreed that a Barney show would be great for kids. Franklin and Rifkin persuaded Leach to let CPTV change the idea of television. The series first aired in 1992 as Barney & Friends. CPTV and Lyrick Studios worked together to make the show (later purchased by HIT Entertainment).

Although the show was a huge hit, PBS initially chose not to pay for more than the first 30 episodes. Upon learning of this, Rifkin and other CPTV executives wrote letters to their PBS member stations, asking them to ask PBS to change its mind. The Lyons Group, on the other hand, urged parents to support Barney & Friends by writing letters and calling their local PBS stations through the Barney Fan Club. As the annual members’ network got together, executives from across the country were furious that one of their most popular shows might be cancelled. PBS finally caved when the situation became what Rifkin later called “like a riot.”

The show was recorded at Color Dynamics Studios on Greenville Avenue and Bethany Drive in Allen, Texas for a number of years. It then moved to studios in Las Colinas in Irving, Texas and then to Carrollton near Dallas. The videos and TV shows are now sold by 9 Story Media Group, HIT Entertainment and Universal Studios. From 2006 to 2010, WNET made the TV shows.

The show begins with the title card and theme song playing over clips from various episodes, then switches to school. The kids do something that sometimes has something to do with the theme of the episode. When the kids think of something, Barney comes to life from a plush doll and transforms into the ‘real’ Barney as they imagine him to be.

This is where the main plot of the episode takes place. Barney and the kids learn about the main theme of the episode together. Baby Bop, BJ, or Riff may appear throughout the episode, and there are often songs related to the episode’s main theme. In later seasons, Baby Bop, BJ, and Riff have larger roles, and later episodes are set outside of school in the neighborhood and in Season 13 in other countries around the world.

Then Barney says goodbye just before the credits roll.
