Medical drama Five Days at Memorial on Apple TV+ follows thousands of people stranded at Memorial Medical Center and LifeCare hospitals in New Orleans during and after Hurricane Katrina. Both hospitals are operated from the same building.
Some of the doctors who work at Memorial are caring for the people and directing the evacuation. One of them is dr. Anna Pou. The show also gives a glimpse into Anna’s personal life by showing her with her husband Vince Pou. Even after the hurricane has passed, the couple spends a night at the memorial. Anna and Vince Pou, whose real name is Vince Panepinto, became close when Anna was studying medicine. Sheri Fink’s eponymous source code for the show states that at the time, Vince was a pharmacist who “flew his own Cessna single-propeller.” Early in their relationship, Vince moved across the country with his partner Anna while she completed a surgical internship in Memphis and an ENT residency program in Pittsburgh. Anna then went to a hospital in Indiana to complete a training program to become a head and neck cancer surgeon. Vince didn’t go with her this time.
Vince stayed in New Orleans while Anna’s training program in Indiana came to an end. After the program, Anna went to the University of Texas Medical Department in Galveston, Texas. Vince was with her too. In April 2004, Anna decided to return to New Orleans to serve as an adjunct professor at Louisiana State University School of Medicine. Anna also had to work at Memorial Medical Center as part of the deal, as the hospital helped pay for her contract with LSU. So Anna started working as a doctor in the hospital. Vince bought a $349,000 home for the couple near the hospital in November 2004. In early 2005, he sold their home in Galveston.
After Hurricane Katrina passed, Vince visited Anna at the memorial. In the endoscopy suite, the two people stayed together. He wanted them to return to their home, which was about a mile from Memorial, the next day. But Anna said she couldn’t come because she had to take care of the patients. Sources say that Vince Panepinto works as an airline pilot in New Orleans, Louisiana, where he is based. Vince joined Capital City Aviation Flight School to become an airline pilot after receiving his BS in Pharmacy. Vince came to Hammond, Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina and flew helicopters to evacuate people from the area. Vince was hurt while Anna was dealing with the case against her. “I’ve seen how hard you work, how much you give up and how you’re always there for everyone, not just your patients. According to Sheri Fink’s source text, he told her, “It hurts me so much to see this happen to you of all people.”
