Sherwood Anderson was the man she met and later married. Together they started a family that eventually included five children. In the early 1950s, Mrs. Diller decided to work as an advertising copywriter for a local newspaper to supplement her husband’s irregular income while they lived in Northern California.

She proved to be an expert. After that, she got a job writing content for a radio station, and Sherwood and her colleagues kept pushing her to bring her humor to the stage.

Following her participation in several sketches in a small-scale production, Ms. Diller (37 at the time) decided to pursue solo employment in the nightclub industry. She began her two-week commitment as a substitute at the Purple Onion in San Francisco on March 7, 1955.

The two weren’t a forever dream, they had divorced in 1965 just after Phyllis left Los Angeles.

Actor Warde Donovan, whom Phyllis married on October 7, 1965, was her second husband. Three months later, she filed for divorce after learning he was an alcoholic and bisexual. Nonetheless, they got back together the day before the divorce went into effect. In 1975, however, she filed for divorce.

She had a relationship with Robert P. Hastings from 1985 until he died in 1996. She called him the love of her life in a 2000 interview, emphasizing that he respected her independence.

As Diller approached her 80th birthday in 1997, she began experiencing several health problems. Her heart stopped while she was in the hospital in 1999.

After receiving a pacemaker, she experienced a serious side effect from the medications that left her immobile. She was able to regain her ability to walk thanks to physiotherapy. As she got closer to age 90, Diller stopped performing stand-up.

She broke her back and had to postpone her appearance for her 90th birthday celebration on The Tonight Show. As part of a panel of comedians, Diller gave his farewell interview on May 15, 2012, after winning the Lifetime Achievement Award in his hometown of Lima, Ohio.

On August 20, 2012, Diller deceased of heart failure in the early morning hours at his home in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles. She was 95 years old. His ashes were scattered in the sea after his cremation.
