The Netflix show The Watcher was filmed in a coastal suburb called The Rye, New York instead of the actual location which was in Westchester County, New York State.
In November 2018, New York Magazine published The Watcher, a story about a New Jersey family threatened by a mysterious letter writer. Ryan Murphy’s upcoming Netflix limited series was inspired by a play by Reeves Wiedeman.
It looks like Halloween will be a little earlier this year thanks to Ryan Murphy, Ian Brennan and their show The Watcher, which will debut on Netflix sometime this fall.
The story is hard to believe, but it’s based on a series of spooky events that really happened in a charming Dutch Colonial home at 657 Boulevard in Westfield, New Jersey.
Where is Netflix’s The Watcher set?
Most of The Watcher is set in Westchester County, the seventh largest county in upstate New York. The film crew will be camping at 1 Warriston Lane in Rye, New York, a seaside suburb.
So instead of using the real house where the story takes place at 657 Boulevard in Westfield, New Jersey, the film crew chose a house that is more appropriate and current. Although the real address is shown, the presentation changes the postcode from 07090 to 11537.
The fact that the show says the house was built in 1921 and has five bathrooms, half a basement, four bedrooms, half a loft, and an indoor pool is interesting.
The actual home of the Broaddus family, on the other hand, was built in 1905, is nearly half an acre, has six bedrooms, four bathrooms, multiple fireplaces, but no pool. But the Rye house, which stands for the Westfield house, was built in 2016 by architecture firm Douglas VanderHorn in Greenwich, Connecticut.
The house is larger than the old house of the Broaddus. It features six bedrooms, all with en-suite bathrooms, and seven bathrooms in an amazing 10,166 square feet. It is also adjacent to much land much larger than 0.46 acres, measuring 1.25 acres.
The rye house is more recent. It was built in 2016 by Greenwich, Connecticut-based architectural firm Douglas VanderHorn. It was last sold in August 2020 for $1.93 million.
The beautiful grounds feature a gravel driveway that wraps around, pretty stone walls, an outdoor fireplace, several lawns, a large deck, and a 70-foot pool with attached spa.

The Watcher release date is set
You can only watch The Watcher on Netflix. On Thursday, October 13, 2022, people will be able to watch all seven episodes. The series is rated MA. Because of this, you might not want to watch it with your family.
The Watcher was influenced by the events Reeves Wiedeman wrote about in his 2018 story for New York Magazine/The Cut. It tells the real-life experiences of Derek and Maria Broaddus, a couple who bought 657 Boulevard, a large home in Westfield, New Jersey, in 2014. They thought it would be the perfect house for them, but as renovations began on the $1.3 million home before they moved in, they received a shocking letter addressed to “The New Owner.”
Before the “Second Coming” of the house, the person who wrote the letter said that he was the keeper and gave that name. The guard also spoke about the couple’s children, telling them they needed to bring in “fresh blood” to fill the house. “You are a parent. I saw her. So far I think I’ve seen three: ‘They put their thoughts on paper.
When the Broaddus family went to the police, they were told not to tell their neighbors what was in the letters because they thought it was likely one of their neighbors had sent them. After an investigation, Michael Langford was chosen as a suspect because of his family’s country and how odd his family was viewed.
Although the Broadusses investigation involved police officers and former FBI agents, the guard was never located and never named.

In addition to Cannavale and Watts, the ensemble cast also includes Mia Farrow, Terry Kinney, Richard Kind, Margo Martindale, Noma Dumezweni, Joe Mantello and Jennifer Coolidge as Karen Calhoun, the real estate agent who sells their New Jersey home to the couple they know.
Coolidge is featured in a teaser video for Netflix’s September release that looks like an advert for a Westfield open house.

Is the story in The Watcher based on a real one?
The Watcher is a new thriller series on Netflix produced by Ryan Murphy. It is based on real events first written about in a 2018 article titled “The Watcher” in The Cut.
Derek and Maria Broaddus bought 657 Boulevard, a six-bedroom home in Westfield, New Jersey, in 2014. It was her dream house. Before they moved in, Derek was working on the house and saw a letter addressed to “the new owner.”
The person who sent the letter dubbed himself “The Watcher” and said she was instructed to keep an eye on the house ahead of its “second coming.”
“My family has been talking about 657 Boulevard for decades, and now as it approaches its 110th birthday, I have the responsibility of keeping an eye on it and waiting for its second appearance. In the 1920s my grandfather looked after the house and in the 1960s it was my father’s turn. Now it’s my turn. Do you know how long the house has been there? You know what’s happening at 657 Boulevard? What do you want? I am going to find that out.”
The Observer’s letter goes on to say that he “noticed” Derek and Maria’s three children and knew they were right.
Derek took the letter to the police, who told him not to discuss the contents with his new neighbors.
Derek and Maria emailed the previous owners of the house. They replied that they had received a similar letter just before they moved out, but had never seen anything like it in the 23 years they had lived there, so they threw the letter away.
Over time, as the family continued to fix up the house before moving in, they kept receiving letters from The Watcher, who always knew the children’s nicknames.
Michael Langford, the Broaddus neighbor, was interrogated because his house overlooked the Broaddus and because people in the area thought he was part of a strange family. Langford was initially a suspect but was eventually acquitted.
Then Derek and Maria hired their own private investigators to find out what was going on. Robert Lenehan, one of the detectives and a former FBI agent, looked at the letter and found evidence that The Watcher was an elderly person. The detective got many ideas from people who wanted to buy the house but didn’t get it. He also thought The Watcher might be inspired by Keanu Reeve’s film The Watcher, in which a serial killer follows a detective trying to catch him.
But in 2014, after police and private investigators investigated many open questions and ideas, the case was closed.
Derek and Maria put their house up for sale six months after receiving the first letter. The house ended up selling for $400,000 below what Derek and Maria paid for it.

Has Netflix stayed true to The Watcher’s original storyline?
The names of the Broaddus family members have been changed for the seven-part Netflix series based on The Watcher.
There will only be two children on the show who are a little older, but Derek and Maria had three children in real life.
Since the series hasn’t come out yet, it’s not clear if Netflix will figure out who The Watcher is or if the mystery will remain open.
