“Not all heroes wear capes.” This adage fits a Texas college student who adopts a little boy he found in a garbage can while on vacation in Haiti, covered in ants.

Jimmy Amisial, 27, found a boy covered in ants in a garbage can. He retrieved the infant from the garbage can and immediately took him to his 66-year-old mother, Elicie Jean. Before reporting him to the police, they reportedly fed and washed the boy and sought medical attention for him.

Amisial informed the local police about the incident. However, after police failed to identify the baby’s birth parents, a judge asked Amisial if he could assume the role of legal guardian for the child. After giving it some thought, Jimmy decided to be his legal guardian and gave him the name Emilio Angel Jeremiah.

How was Emilio located by Jimmy Amisial?

When Emilio visited his mother in Haiti in December 2017 during a break from Texas State University, Amisial reached out to him. Amisial volunteered at the nearby orphanage during the break. One day while walking to the orphanage, he saw a group of people gathered around a dumpster. Amisial was making his way forward when he discovered the container contained a four-month-old boy.

Amisial remarked, “Little did I know that my life would change forever when I woke up that day. “I overheard them arguing about what to do with this little baby as they swarmed around that trash can. Nobody wanted to help; everyone just stared at him. I had to act because he was sobbing and not wearing any clothes and I could feel the sadness in his eyes,” he added.

Amisial pulled the infant out of the cradle and gave it to her mother. Jimmy’s mother was shocked to see how the 4-month-old was doing. They cleaned the infant and took him to the doctor for a check-up to ease their concerns.

The two called the police, who launched an investigation to try to identify the baby’s birth parents, but tragically were unable to do so.

Days passed while the hearing continued. A court asked Amisial if he wanted to be the child’s legal guardian on the final day of the hearing. Amisial said: “I spent days awake, tossing and turning, trying to decide when I was being asked to raise him. My family has always had financial difficulties and I was already behind on my tuition. However, the poor boy faced a life of instability and uncertainty because I did not have a father when I was growing up. I took a leap of faith because I felt like something happened for a reason.”

Amisial has been the legal guardian of little boy Emilio for five years, during which time he has divided his time between his studies and caring for Emilio.

Amisial will now officially apply to adopt Emilio. “He was four months old when I found him; today he is almost five. Amisial continued: “I’m incredibly proud of him; It was a wonderful journey watching him grow up. I am thankful for the last four and a half years because I had to do what I had to do when nobody else wanted to. I really feel like a father and look forward to proclaiming Emilio my son in writing. However, I have to raise the necessary funds first. I’m glad I had the chance to save it from the trash and turn it into a priceless gem.”

Amisial has started the formal adoption process for Emilio. He started a GoFundMe campaign because he needs $30,000 to complete the adoption and isn’t given a close date until he sends in the money.
