Toney began his professional career with Northampton Town, the football team of his birthplace and city. On 13 November 2012, he made his first-team debut in a game that ended in a 3–3 draw in the FA Cup first round at Bradford City. He came on as a substitute for Lewis Wilson at the end of regular time and his team lost the match on penalties 4–2. He was the youngest player to ever make the club’s first team at the age of 16. The following day he scored four goals in the FA Youth Cup match against York City resulting in a 5–0 win for his team.
