John David McAfee: Who is he?
John David McAfee (September 18, 1945 – June 23, 2021).
The Libertarian Party’s nomination for President of the United States in 2016 and 2020 was unsuccessfully sought by a British-American computer programmer, businessman and two-time presidential candidate. He created the first antivirus program for sale in 1987 and formed McAfee Associates to commercialize it. In 1994 he announced his retirement and sold his last holdings. In later years, McAfee became the company’s loudest critic, advising customers to uninstall the company’s antivirus software, which he described as “bloatware.” He criticized the company for continuing to advertise using its name despite a brief attempt at a corporate redesign among Intel owners.
During the 2007–2008 financial crisis, McAfee’s fortunes plummeted. After leaving McAfee Associates, he founded many companies including Future Tense Central, QuorumEx and Tribal Voice which developed the chat application PowWow. He has also held senior positions at Everykey, MGT Capital Investments and Luxcore. His interests in both his personal and professional life have included light sport aircraft, yoga, smartphone apps, bitcoin and recreational drug use. He lived in Belize for a time but left for the United States in 2013, although he was still wanted in Belize on suspicion of murder.

To market this program, which he dubbed VirusScan, McAfee founded McAfee Associates Inc. in 1987. This was one of the first software products to be delivered over the Internet and the first antivirus program to hit the market.
