Dick Wolf is the creator of both the original Law & Order series, on which the spin-off series is based, and the American crime series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, which Wolf created.
The first episode of the show aired in September 1999 and follows the lives of detectives assigned to the New York City Police Department’s 16th Precinct Special Victims Unit.
The division focuses on offenses such as rape, sexual assault, and child abuse, as well as any offense tangentially linked to any of the three, such as domestic violence, kidnapping, and child abandonment. Additionally, the unit investigates every crime loosely related to any of the three.
The show also follows Olivia Benson, played by Mariska Hargitay, as she rises through the ranks of the police force, starting as a detective and then up to the position of lieutenant, while continuing to work with a partner.
