On Monday morning, a driving school vehicle was involved in an accident on Highway 218 near Janesville. The accident killed Fairbank Mayor Gregory Harter and injured three other people, including two teenagers.

During the 2018-19 Wapsie Valley school year, the mayor also served as the interim superintendent of schools. He has been Mayor of Fairbank since 2018. Prior to that, he served on the city council for two years.

Gregory Harter was a driving instructor for a program called Street Smarts in Cedar Falls at the time of his death.
Gregory was in a Street Smarts car driven by a Waterloo teenager who was only 14 years old.
According to the Iowa State Patrol’s accident report, the teenager’s 2014 Chevrolet Impala was traveling south on Highway 218 around 8:30 a.m. when he crashed into his shoulder.
The driver overcorrected, crossing the southbound lanes and median and getting in the path of northbound traffic, hitting a 2010 Toyota Highlander driven by Tabetha Gehrke, 44, of Waterloo.
Both drivers and a teenage passenger in Waverly’s Impala were injured and taken to hospitals in Waterloo.
The State Patrol says the accident is still under investigation. The Janesville Fire and Police Departments, the Bremer County Sheriff’s Office, the Waverly Ambulance, the Iowa Department of Transportation and the State Coroner were all at the scene.

Gregory “Mike” Harter married Marla Harter and they had two children, Andy and Ryan Harter.
The public doesn’t know much about Harter’s family members yet, but they must have been devastated to hear of his death following the accident.
