Lenska was born in the EVAC American Military Hospital, a former Polish refugee camp, in the English village of Diddington. Before the war, her family owned a castle and estate in Kazimierza Wielka, Poland. They were Polish nobles with Pomeranian coats of arms.

Before Germany took over Poland, her father, Major Graf Ludwik Ubieski, worked for Poland’s Foreign Minister Jozef Beck. Rula was one of her parents’ three children. In the late 1950s and early 1960s her sister Anna was a film actress.
