Will Corlys die? Is it true that Steve Toussaint is leaving House of Dragons?

One of the main protagonists of the House of the Dragon show, Corlys Velaryon, is portrayed on the show by Steve Toussaint. He is without a doubt the most prominent member of his house in the annals of Westeros history. Just as the Targaryens came from the ancient Valyrian Freehold, the Velaryons had been in Westeros for a very long time and arrived long before the fall. They are masters of the water, although kite riding is not a traditional part of their culture. The mightiest of all is the Corlys, also known as the Sea Serpent because of its aquatic lifestyle.

With him at the head of the family, House Velaryon had reached the peak of its power, wealth, and influence, almost reaching the level of the royal house of Targaryens, to whom the Velaryon were related. In Episode 8 of House of the Dragon, entitled The Lord of the Tides, it is revealed that Corlys was injured during the fight in the Stepstones and is currently fighting for his life due to the blood fever that developed from his injuries. As a result, a crisis over the succession of power at Driftmark has arisen, with Corlys’ brother Vaemond raising doubts about the paternity of Lucerys Velaryon, whom Corlys had chosen as his heir. We’ve got the answers to your questions about whether or not Corlys will die soon and whether or not Toussaint will leave “House of the Dragon” during the show’s first season. Will Corlys meet her end?

Some chapters from George RR Martin’s 2018 book Fire & Blood served as inspiration for the TV show House of the Dragon. The show acts as a prequel to the popular HBO series Game of Thrones, just as George RR Martin’s ongoing magnum opus book series A Song of Ice and Fire includes a prequel titled Fire & Blood. Contrary to what was seen in the series, in the novels Corlys suddenly fell ill with a fever in AD 126. It was widely believed that he could die at any time, leading to a dispute between Vaemond and Lucerys Velaryon and her family over who would succeed Vaemond as Master of Driftmark and Lord of the Tides. This fight was destined to happen. However, Vaemond didn’t actually make the explanation that Rhaenyra’s children were born naturally before the king like he did in the series. Despite this, Daemon severed Vaemond’s head.

As far as Corlys is concerned, the disease ended up not being fatal. Corlys had fully recovered his health by the year 129 AD, the year in which civil war began between two factions of the Targaryen dynasty. After that, he became a notable participant in the Dance of the Dragons. At the start of the series, he was a member of the Black faction, along with the majority of his family members, who all belonged to the same faction. However, as the series progresses, he eventually becomes a member of the Green faction. It’s reasonable to assume that Corlys will continue to play a role in the plot of upcoming episodes of House of the Dragon considering what else is going to happen in the story. In the series, Corlys is one of the lucky characters to survive the events of the Civil War. He died in AD 132 at the age of 79.

Is Steve Toussaint parting ways with House of the Dragon?

Toussaint won’t be leaving House of the Dragon, that’s for sure. Due to the fact that his character will play such a significant role in the Civil War, the show won’t be getting rid of him any time soon. Because Velaryons are described in the books as having classic Valyrian traits such as silver hair, pale complexion, and purple eyes, the casting of Toussaint, a black actor, was met with controversy when it was first announced. There is no question that some of the criticism was influenced by racism. Others objected, citing their status as “book purists”. In any case, Toussaint’s portrayal of the role has led an overwhelming majority of people to conclude that he is the most qualified candidate for the position.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly in 2022, series co-creator and co-showrunner Ryan Condal discussed the rationale for Toussaint’s casting. When the first episode of Game of Thrones aired ten years ago, the world was very different than it is today. Things have changed significantly since Peter Jackson directed The Lord of the Rings almost two decades ago. The actor noted that narratives of this nature should strive to welcome a wider range of perspectives than has been the case in the past. “It was really important for Miguel and I to produce a program that wasn’t just another bunch of white people on screen, to be perfectly clear,” she said. “We wanted to make sure the cast was diverse.”
